    First Friday

    moderator_lisa Ranger

In our area, we have a series of events during the pleasant seasons called, First Friday. During each month between May and September (or maybe October, weather permitting), small businesses in the vicinity participate in a sort of open house. Local residents and other business owners are invited to stop by, take a look around, speak with the owners, and take part in a community-wide networking opportunity. These events help create a sense of community between the local business owners and the people who live nearby.  You can learn more about First Friday events at First Friday on Wikipedia.

Does your community offer this type of activity for local businesses? Do you think this sort of event would help your business, and would you consider starting one?

This is absolutely wonderful, Lisa, thank you so much for sharing.

We do not have such events in our area but will surely explore possibilities if it can be hosted. This is truly the old school Networking and I believe that quality with the humane touch is always better than the quantity it's Social Media counterpart offers!

Adding to your post, Lisa - we, A business owners, can just look around and see many opportunities to reach out in their community to help others.  Why not choose one: Habitat for Humanity, food pantries, nursing homes, schools, shelters, and the list can go on and on?  Dress in your company tee shirts, if you have them - if not, this is a great opportunity to get them.

Then let the community know that your company has chosen (give the date) a Day of Sharing - what you will be doing - and invite any interested others to join you in this day.  I can guarantee that your team will finish the day getting more than they gave!

Thanks, moderator_ani - it really is a great way to get to know our community members and fellow business owners. Frequently, the various businesses also offer a selection of treats and/or local wines, beers, or spirits, in tasting portions to help spread interest in the local options. This has the added benefit of bringing in more people and lends an air of festivity to the occasion.

That's a great suggestion, Moderator_Cath - any opportunity to give back is a good opportunity for networking on a grass-roots level, while building team morale and helping someone less fortunate than ourselves. Wearing company t-shirts, providing time off for participation, even paying your team members to make time to help the community are all great ways to reinforce giving back and sharing the power of good.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post and share your thoughts!
