Can't say I agree with that. As a small business owner, I've learned that web design is obsolete for all intents and purposes. The real issue is competitive sabotage by larger competitors - with negative web reviews not written by actual customers to making fake purchases just to engage in chargeback fraud --- those are the real issues.

I think both Diana and Peter bring up valid points. The website design and navigation is very important. At the same time paying attention to what the competitors are doing to sabotage your business is necessary as well. I think the big problem for small business owners is to find time and expertise needed to run professional quality website. It is best to leave to outside professionals who are expert at creating and maintaining the websites.

Web design experts can certainly provide excellent advice.  However, if they help you ongoing with your site and handle all of these tasks, cost may become an issue.   The cost per hour some web designer experts charge has been very high in the past which is another challenge specifically for small businesses.  Small business owners need to have some information and skill as far as options on the framework to use and how to do some work on the site themselves, or have someone in house handle some tasks.

For example, outdated content was mentioned.  It is rare for anyone other than the owners or those running the business every day to know what the best new content should be and how it should be written.  Web experts can polish this and offer advice, but the core content needs to originate from the website owner.  Security is becoming a more important issue.   There are more frequent reports of hackers taking sites down, not just to obtain customer information but simply breaking into sites, possibly to see if any valuable information is there. Good Luck

Koln, a website is marketing. When a business sets its budget for the up coming year, the cost to effectively maintain a website should be factored in. If the website is done properly and is marketed properly, the cost should be covered by the new clients that the businesses website has attracted. If that is not the case, than they should refer to Diana's well written post.

I do agree that security is a major issue and this should also be considered when designing a site. Many times when it comes to small businesses, I find that "because I am too small and if its not broken, don't fix it" attitude gets older established owners into trouble. Why not plan ahead instead of waiting for the trouble to happen first?

I think the biggest problem small businesses have with setting up websites is approaching the project logically.  While design may play a role in the success of a site, the first issues to consider are:

1 - What, realistically, do you expect the website to accomplish (for most small business the realistic answer to that question is that the site will be a tool that convinces people to contact them to do business  or to make an online purchase now. While the site might attract some local traffic on its own if it's set up properly, most small businesses will have to promote or advertise the website to get targeted visitors there.

2 - Once you get people to your home page or any other page on your site, what is the next action you want them to take - and how should the web page look to encourage that action to be taken?

3 - What is the one-time and lifetime value of a customer?

4 - How much time and/or money will you spend promoting the website to get people to look at it?

5 - How much time and money can you afford to put into web design and ongoing maintenance based on the value of new and returning customers ?

One additional point related to design: Design and navigation are important, BUT be careful that the purpose of your site isn't overshadowed by design. Graphic designers can sometimes produce gorgeous work that do absolutely nothing to actually move a visitor towards the action you want them to take. Or, for that matter to put in enough text on the page to give your page any chance of getting found even when someone searches for your type of business located in your city.

Considering on average basis your thought is right almost but not to whole extent because some of small business house maintain their website on regular basis. And for them to maintain and make changes in website is not a big deal because it doesn't cost too much mental stress as their operational area and services are limited and specified as compared to big business house. but it is only some of small business house not for whole.
