What Kind of Software Does Your Small Business Need?

I'm kind of wearing blinders; most software gripes I have are lumber yard specific.  Are there applications you're using now that are too expensive?  Are the developers unresponsive or sluggish toward changes you want made?

Interesting statement. Where are you going with it.

Today computers and software systems are prime examples of a mode that is well suited to low impact,

low confidence purchases where transactions can be accomplished by the machine.

Todays software is geared towards convenience and can be unforgiving of errors and questions.

I don't know as I was necessarily gong anywhere with it.  I've been barking up trees lately though (software companies I have to deal with) and wondered what people here were running into.  Being an open soruce advocate, I'm also very curious as to whether anyone has gone that route with their business and made a conscious effort to swear off as much proprietary software as they can.  If not open source, then at least cross platform (windows, mac, linux, mobile)
