New Business Please HELP!!!!

Lundon5208 Novice

Hi All,

I just joined the small business community and I was hoping to get some insight on how to start my online business...  I'm from Mass and I've tried asking individuals for some help but I just keep getting the run-around.  My goal is to start a small online boutique (selling little boy's apparel only) from home and to eventually get it to the point where I want it... I was inspired by my little boy and this is something that I've been thinking about since he was born (3yrs).

If anyone can jump in and give me some insight on how to trademark my name to how to start that would be great.  Hopefully this forum can help me with my business venture and hopefully get to know some fellow business owners.

I would start by coming up with a detailed business plan and typing it out so you can send it to people for critique. The ones I've seen have been 8-10 pages long or longer. You should see if there is a local SCORE office near you. They would be able to help get you going. Also, down the road an SBA loan would probably be what you would want to get for financing but online startups can be risky for banks unless there is sizable equity put in by the owner. Hope that helps a little.

Hi Lundon: Have you been to the Small Business Administrations website yet? They answer a lot of questions there and are a great resource for small biz information. For example, you can read about starting & managing a small business, how to name a business, the difference between trade names and trademarks, registering your fictitious DBA name, patents, trademarks & copyright and much more!

Best of luck to you in your endeavours!

You should also check out www.choosewhat.com for a free startup checklist that will help you with the necessary steps to set up your business properly from the get-go.

I just noticed that since my last visit here, Steve Strauss posted a new article entitled 5 Places To Get Free Help which not only mentions the SBA site that I talked about earlier, but SCORE and some other resources you may find helpful. Be sure to check it out!

    Hi MJ,

Filing for a trademark is somewhat easy to do yourself. We did one here in GA a year ago, but ended up not needed to use it. You should be able to get the info you need from the secretary of state for your local state (just find their website).

My wife and I started an online business last year and did almost $100k in our first year. Message me if you want specific input.

First you will have to define your budget and then define what steps you will be doing arrange the steps in the order you would be doing them. Its important that you tackle one step at a time and put all your efforts in it till its done, then move on to the next task. Sometimes you will be tested and have to be consistent to overcome any hurdles in the task. Next ask for help whenever needed and try to give as much details as possible as this way helpers could give detailed solutions according to your situation, budget and business type etc and it would be easier for them to help when more details are provided. There are a lot of people that would be happy to assist you in the process. First step is building an online store and then next step is ongoing marketing for the store. Don’t forget the marketing part as it’s the most important part even if you have the perfect store it should be visible in search results only then it will move on to a successful business. Once you build the site don’t forget to engage with customers and get some improvement ideas from them as that is the most valuable feedback.

For building a site you can use wordpress or you can use some sites that give all in one services. For shopping carts you can use www.easystorecreator.com it has a lot of options and unlimited items option.

For payment you can either use pay pal at the start and then switch to a merchant account once you start getting some business. Pay pal pro also works as a merchant account either switch to pay pal pro later on or any other good gateway supported by the platform you decide to use.

Easystore has a 45 days full money back guarantee so you can test drive it and in their promotion they are giving a free template design with each signup.

Its really a guesswork if you can give some more details about the plan you have for the business and the budget  then it would be easy for us to list suggestions within the budget and according to your requirements if any. If you have some requirements don’t forget to post them as this way we can see if the suggested site can be used to cover the requirements.

All the best for the new business.

Don’t lose hope at any point  and keep trying I have seen people with crap sites and nothing but determination succeed all you need is determination and will for success to be successful.

You might try out these websites: www.hmadaki.zeekrewards.com or http://www.got20seconds.com/hmadaki/Cst.aspx

This is essentially a business model or design base on the principles of penny auctions or you can pricisely call it a penny auction site. When enrolled as a preffered affiliate you have the option of posting your own products at your own wholesale store. These sites have huge customer traffic, because each affiliate place at least one online advert everyday and you get paid for placing such ads. Try and check these websites out, it might be helpful

I realize it has been over a month since your first question, but I am new to this site so I will still respond.  When I started out the best advise I was told was to make an appointment with my local SCORE office, and I am really glad I did.  Our counselor has guided us on everything from working on the Business Plan to making our website and ideas on how to get our name known so we can build our client base.  We are still working on our Business Plan, while we are working on our clients' accounts, since there is a lot to writting a Business Plan.  It was suggested that even though we don't have our Business Plan completed yet, as long as we have put down on paper what our goals are and what we want to accomplish, and use this as a guide for any decisions we make, then we can continue to work on building our client base, while working on our Business Plan.  We were getting so bogged down with the Business Plan, which was overwhelming at first, that we put off getting clients until we felt we should.  We learned that we didn't have to wait, that we could work on both.  SCORE has been a very valuable tool for us and I suspect they will be for quite a while.  Good luck and don't give up.  There are always people out there who are willing to help.
