Its actually real simple to register a name that you want to do business as, Its called a Fictitious Filing. You have to registered that in the County that you generally will be doing business in...A Fictitious Filing allows a individual to do business as A DBA:....So for example your name is John Doe but you want your company to be (AAA Service) you can file that with your local county clerk, generally the fee for that is under 50 dollars then you will have to register it with your local newspaper that your doing business under that name....NOW the other way is to Incoporate your business generally thats more expensive but the easiest way to set it all up is to do it online probobly threw a Legalzoom.com type of website.....Good Luck
You want to carefully think through the business structure you choose, because it will affect how you are taxed on the state & federal level, and your personal liability if your business is sued. Here are a few links that you may find helpful:
I don't know what state you live in, but you should be able to check its corporation database to see if another business has a name similar to the one you want to use.
This link will give you more information on the trademark process: http://www.uspto.gov/trademarks/index.jsp
Thank you for sharing those links, mvtlaw!
I found Legalzoom to be quite affordable and helpful and it took care of everything for me. They even have three easy installements to afford it. They handle so many other services such as copyright etc. Go to their website and take their questionaire. From there you can read up on the stages and what is necassary. http://www.legalzoom.com
so i have a business idea, had one for quite a while. im good on the whole marketing, advertising and product development thing. I have a company name in mind, so i guess my question is how do i protect / register the company name (do i register it with the state i belong to?) how much does it cost to register? where do i go to register it? I dont want anyone to take this name, as i will soon be purchasing business cards and setting up a website and i also am creating a logo. do i have to trademark my logo too along with registering my business name? Sorry im just new to the whole 'start-up' thing. i figured i would just ask here since some of you are more qualified to answer this question. your help is much appreciated.
