eBay buyers will calculate total cost, so it might be off putting for some to pay $10 or $12 for shipping if let's say the cost of the item is only $20 or so. I think it really depends on the cost of your item and how heavy/how much it would be if you shipped it by weight.
I would add that a flat rate can be a turn-off to some people, who, for ex purchased a scarf for $10 and is asked to pay $10 for shipping. I was thinking of having a flat shipping rate on my online store to simplify things but I recalled being turned-off many times and not buying items due to high & "unfair" shipping cost. So it's worth the work to have shipping costs based on what will be charged by USPS or other shipping couriers, in terms of distance & weight. You probably can have a mix of both.

I am starting to get into eBay as a hobby and wanted to find out what shipping options/price tiers people recommend. The goods that I am selling vary in weight, so to be consistent I was thinking of charging one flate rate for all my items, and use the flat rate boxes from the U.S. Post Office.
