I would definitely recommend doing everything you can to become great at marketing.
You need to really understand your prospect, what frustrates them, etc, in order to be able to reach them. Create a customer profile that you can "speak to" whenever you are writing a new marketing campaign.
Here's a blog post I wrote about how to create a customer profile:
I hope this helps and best of luck with your new business!
You have the perfect opportunity to work with a
mentor. Find who is one of the top repo companies
in the area you are currently in. Once you have
this companies name, contact the Chamber or
Business Lic. and find a direct contact for him.
Simply tell him your plans for your new move
and let him know you would be honored (make it
good) if you could pick all his knowledge. In time
ask him to remain your mentor till you are up and
running. If you have a spare day or hours a week
ask to work for him for free (wife also) in order to
get a feel for all the ins and outs. You are not
a threat to him since you will not share clients.
