We have completed several projects with both local government, state and federal governments. We've not experienced any problems at all in payments (especially compared to the current private sector), however, once or twice we''ve learned a lesson on getting everything specified in the contract up front. In particular, the milestones and dates for payment. The contract will be taken literally, so make sure that you can work with the payment milestones specified in the contract. In particular, one contract we had did not specify payment milestones and it was this agency's policy to pay only upon completion of work. That was a long time to wait for payment.

I was wondering if anyone else who had worked with the government, recently or not, has had problems once they've won the contract. Whether the government didn't pay on time, there was something in the guidelines that wasn't there before, anything along those lines. We recently won some contracts and wanted to make sure that the payment comes soon or they don't do it for some untold reason.
