What is the easiest way to utilize Go Daddy services and products to create a profitable website?

The first thing you need to do is a have a plan and a product that people want. It could be information or services you provide, software or a physical piece of merchandise you ship to your customers. Next, you need to get the word out about your company. This could be through traditional advertising or word of mouth.

We make all of our products easy to use. More often than not, we have exactly what our customers are looking for to get their presence going online.

How can this be done with little to no investment?

Compared to starting a brick and mortar store, your costs are minimal. If you don't need a shopping cart online, it's as cheap as a domain name and Web site Tonight, which runs as little as $4.99 a month.

If you need a shopping cart, you will invest a little more into your site with Quick Shopping Cart, which starts at $9.99 a month.

So, for about $15 a month, you can be up and selling.

    Hi Warren,

Thanks for taking the time to host this event!

Is it common practice to snatch up similiar domain names and securing vanity urls when creating a web strategy? How many is too many?

I am confused by the options for implementing a website - I have purchased a couple of domain names through GoDaddy, but am not sure whether to build a site outside of GoDaddy or inside of GoDaddy and then when I have a site built, host with someone else or host with GoDaddy. And for the site, what are the best elements for a small site with 1) some products for sale, 2) some information to share, 3) perhaps some links to Amazon, etc. for recommended books, and 4) perhaps a blog? (Of course, you could answer this last question from GoDaddy's perspective.) Thanks!

One of the greatest benefits of Go Daddy is that you won't need to go anywhere else to get all your services. We're a one stop shop with 24/7 support, products to make hosting, blogging, and shopping easy, and everything's competitively priced. In terms of hosting, we are the largest shared hosting provider in North America. We offer a wide variety of hosting plans (shared, virtual, dedicated, and most recently, grid hosting). We also have an application exchange for our hosting customers, Hosting Connection, where with one click, you can setup any of 60 popular web applications.

The best elements to consider for site design are ease of navigation, clear and concise text, clear product descriptions and photos, appropriate contact information, customer testimonials, and, of course, general information about your company. If you are conducting commerce, you should get an SSL certificate to secure credit card transactions. Blogging is great way to connect to your customers, but you have to be willing to commit to keeping it updated. Lastly, when building a Web site, make sure you focus on search engine optimization because ranking is vital for obtaining the traffic you need to be successful.

As online merchants mature, more companies are grabbing vanity URLs and bcurious spellings of their domain to protect their identity. One rule of thumb to follow is to ask yourself whether or not you would be upset if someone else bought a particular variation of your domain name. If there answer is yes, the simplest option is to buy it first. One example is gapjeans.com which redirects to gap.com.

You can also incorporate various domain names into your marketing strategy. A creative campaign using a domain name related to your brand can help bring interest to your products. Nuggnuts.com is a current example of a large company (McDonald's) creating a whole site devoted to a single product as part of a marketing campaign with a larger purpose.

    Warren,

Can you speak on how domain auctions work? How big is the domain buying/selling market?

We believe that domain names represent 21st century real estate. As the importance of domain names has increased with the growth of online activity we have seen the value of domain names rise significantly. This has led to a vibrant secondary market where domain holders are auctioning names.

We run an auction site, http://auctions.godaddy.com, devoted to matching interested buyers and sellers. Many thousands of names are sold each month. The site is similar to other popular auction sites that you already know how to use. There are currently more than 300K domain names for auction or sale on our site.

As a point of reference, there's somewhere around 174 million domain names registered worldwide.

If customers will be entering confidential information (home address, annual income, social security numbers, etc) about themselves on my website, what sort of security should I be looking into to protect that information?

First, you should be using an SSL certificate to protect the transmission of all data between the customer's browser and the server. For more information on SSL certificates, you can go here:

Any time you're collecting sensitive information, there are many security precautions that need to be taken. For example, if you're collecting credit card data, Payment Card Industry compliance is required. Different types of information have different requirements, and it wouldn't be appropriate for me to go into detail in this forum. Suffice it to say, you will need to research what requirements exist for the specific information that you want to collect.

How do you pick a good domain name?

    Qualities of good domain names
    -Easy to spell
    -Easy to remember

    Don't use confusing spellings

When choosing a company name, see if the domain name is available

Think ahead about domain names. If you currently sell auto parts and want to get into selling truck parts eventually, pick the appropriate domains names early (and before you tell anyone about your plans).

If I am just starting, what should be on my Web site?

    • Your Web site should tell potential customers what you do & include contact info
      • Easy to find contact information
      • Offer multiple forms of contact (phone, email, fax)
    • If you're selling services, have a concise description of the products/services offered
      • If you have a physical office/store provide the address, a map, and your hours of operation
    • For information only Web sites, don't go overboard with information
      • Show some examples of what it is you do/sell
    • Have third party input about your company to build customer confidence including:
      • Customer testimonials about products/examples of your services
      • Link to other sites that have testimonials about you (kudos have more influence coming from someone else)
      • Link to industry awards or your Better Business Bureau listing
    • Link to your Social Media sites (blog, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, etc) if applicable
    • If you have a niche audience, cater to them specifically
      • Entertainment providers should have a calendar/schedule for visitors to know your availability
      • Radio stations should have DJ info (pics/schedules/bio
    • Always make sure you provide excellent customer service
