Re: How Many Apps is Enough?
Moderator Jim Oct 9, 2012 9:22 AM (in response to Moderator Jim)Just updating with the news that Microsoft is now overhauling all of its basic apps for the "modern interface." Will this impact your buying decision?

Re: How Many Apps is Enough?
fshagan Oct 18, 2012 10:16 AM (in response to Moderator Jim)I always take a wait and see approach for my business apps. I don't mind being on the cutting edge for personal use, but that is what I call the "bleeding edge" for business class products. Many, many companies are still running Windows XP for instance, even though MS is withdrawing support for it.
I will wait at least for "Service Pack 1" before considering Windows 8, and then only if I need a new computer. I think it will have more impact on the tablet and phone market than on the desktop, at least at first.

Re: How Many Apps is Enough?
applieditgroup Oct 18, 2012 1:03 PM (in response to fshagan)Windows 8 is likely to fail in the Enterprise merely because most have just finished upgrading to 7 or are still in the process of upgrading. I am sure it's fine by MSFT merely because their aim is to get the share of the tablet market where they have been a non-contender up to now.
As far as initial questions. To me the number of apps plays no difference. Most of them are non essential for business operations.

Re: How Many Apps is Enough?
newsworldinside Oct 23, 2012 11:43 AM (in response to Moderator Jim)I use windows 8 trail for two months. While using i don't care about how many extra apps are available at their app store, because to me, hundreds of apps will worthless if those are not improve which I use regularly.

Re: How Many Apps is Enough?
Moderator Jim Nov 2, 2012 9:30 AM (in response to newsworldinside)They've been updating them a lot over the past week. I do like having the mail on the "Modern UI" screen without having to fire up a desktop application, much like on my android tablet. The rest of them are getting there, though the music player needing an entire full screen still boggles...

Microsoft is facing a wave of criticism for having under 10,000 apps ready for the launch of Windows 8's "modern interface" as compared to the Android and iOS platforms. While the applications Microsoft is offering are described as "quality products," can a handful of "quality products" stand up against the sheer volume of applications available for the other systems? And do the numbers actually matter to you when buying?
Love to hear from you!
Jim
