Need recommendations for selecting a logo designer

I'm currently the founder for new business and I'm in need of locating a logo designer. I found a few of them on the
internet but I'm unsure of what I should base my selection process on besides price. If anyone has any recommendations for
a logo designer they utilized or any suggestions on how to find a great one it will be highly appreciated.

    Hi
I think you should base it on their existing folio of work, qualifications and what they specialize in.

As a logo designer myself I like to get to know the business as much as possible, that includes finding out about their
target markets, competitors & collaborators, short & long term business goals, etc. I believe better research equals better results.
but in the end it comes down to the one strong unique message you want to convey to your customers, this is ultimately what the logo is about.

90% of my clients are start-up businesses, I am very flexible and have worked with many small budgets to help kickstart new products & services.
My folio can be viewed here http://www.xyarts.com.au/ for your consideration.

    Hello BuyTime,

I'm a 20 year veteran of advertising. I spent over ten years working on Southwest Airlines, Air Force, BMW and many others.

It's about our portfolios and our professional attitude. Our portfolios should inspire you to think about how your brand equity is going to rise. You should want to work with us because we get you excited. Look for people who can take you beyond what you're immediately asking for then you're ready once the business needs hit and you're positioned for growth.

I'd be happy to talk to you about where I've been and where you're going. Finally, do a search for "why logos don't cost $5". It's a great article that will help you understand the nuances of good design in the foundation of a brand.

Approach your local Fine Arts School and ask them if they'd be interested in a co-op excercise for their students as an open competition to submit designs for a commercial project.

Give them all of the necessary parameters and make it a matter of a prize for the winner in the form of a gift certificate for art supplies. This will allow the school to stimulate the students and offer them real-world experience in many ways. If the Art School or Academy is adverse to this idea, approach your local High School Art Departments, they are always open to creative and meaningful interests. I would do this before simply hiring someone who already possesses a professional portfolio. ( I am reminded of a quote from the Joyce Carey novel; "The Horse's Mouth" ; in which the principal character artist Gully Jimson remarked when looking at a painting that; 'Amateur's, do much the more interesting work'.)
