Facebook pages

How many of you have a small business page on Facebook?  I'm curious what everyone thinks of the new pages upgrade?  I'm not really sure if I like it or not yet.  I rather wish Facebook would give us a little more of a heads up.  Have you worked on your page lately?  Anything you find difficult or really dislike?

    Hi Kathleen,

I dont really like the new pages upgrade. My company helps clients to increase their revenue with Facebook a lot so we have to deal with these changes. It is only a visual change, using it is still the same. Client are still thrilled when we add a few extra thousand fans to their fan page, no matter how often Facebook likes to change and upgrade their pages.

Anybody else likes or dislikes the new pages upgrade?

      HI Marc,

I'm not fond of the upgrade but we will see how fans like it. Actually, there are some UI changes that make it difficult for not so tech savy individuals.  Fans are great but quality and quantitative information on consumer insights is much more important to a brand.

On a side note, could you please remove your URL from your signature.  We prefer that you utilize the profile that is available for all members.  Let me know if you need any assistance with it.

      Thanks for your input!

      Kathleen

I'm not entirely thrilled with it, but not much I can do about it. Guess it'll take time to get used to it, but by then, FB will eventually change it by then.

I am not a big fan of it either and the way they snuck up on us wasn't great either.

Have you noticed they removed the Share button on websites as well? All there is a like button now.

Not sure anyone is aware or not but tomorrow the pages upgrade will forced to all.

So if you haven't updated yet, you may want to preview to see if you will have any issues.

Businesses have a great deal of options when it comes to customizing their Facebook page, including the abilty to incorporate their own business identity into the look and feel.

I agree though for many small business owners the lack of technical knowledge of how to setup Facebook and use it ... is a whole different conversation.

The best advice I can give is setup a page on your personal facebook account and just don't publish it.  Then use the development section of each application to fully understand each app's ability.

Working on doing that myself now.  Testing apps and what is or is not available.

I don't really like it either, but not so much because of the layout, but rather because it's hard to get customers to "like" it. Often "liking" a page means users will receive notifications that they don't care about. Any tips to incentivize people to "like" the page and stick with it?

It has been really helpful I think for the companies that I work with on their social media strategy and implimentation.

    .

My Durham Concrete company has a page up that has brought them several new customers. You can see it here, Carolina Concrete Constructors.

One of my other companies I work with has an extremely active facebook page that actually drives the majority of it's revenue at this point. You can see the Diamond Candles facebok page here. They make a very unique line of candles that really lends itself to people sharing about what they make and what they do.

    Hi Kathleen,

Change is always hard. The average user spends 45 minutes a day on Facebook which means a lot of time getting used to the menus and layout. There was an insightful Web 2.0 keynote by one of the Facebook web designers who explained the process of redesigning the Facebook page, the public's reaction and the lessons that Facebook learned in the process.

Pretty amazing how much the social web is changing human communication.

At first I didn't like the update but the web is always changing and we must be able to adapt and change the way we do things too. I must say that after setting up a few new apps and going through their developer's page, you realize that it's almost the same, perhaps maybe even better.

So far, the only I got frustrated on Facebook page is about the "Language". I studied the FB by myself and just add 2 labels right now.

I saw the new change as a slight distraction for my business. But web 2.0 products are a key to small business success in today's market. I'd say take the time to learn the new layout, whether or not you "like" it

I'm not a big fan of the new pages, but even in the old style we were having a hard time getting real numbers up there....

My best advice is to not rely heavily on Facebook, Google, Twitter, nor any other social networking platform for your primary business presence on the web. They can be good funnels to your primary website, but I would never rely on, for example, Facebook page for my primary business presence. Nor would I rely solely (or heavily) on Google's indexing or Adsense for traffic and revenue.

To take this a step further, has anyone tried Facebook advertising to market their pages? What type of experience did you have and did it result in increased page visits?

I am using Facebook for my business site.  Facebook pages are more relevant to spread your business product/service. It's a great way to interact with your potential customers.

    Hi Kathleen,

Basically facebook still has the same use for business owners which is good. They changed the interface a bit which isn't good including facebook chat which is now almost too irritating to use. And yes, I do agree with you that facebook should at least give us a heads up before making such updates and bad updates I might add. But still it is still one of the basic and most effective marketing plans that every business owner should really do in order to keep in touch with the customers and make publicity.

I agree with your assessment of Facebook for businesses, that it is an effective marketing tool.

Has anyone looked at Google+ in terms of marketing ?

Do you see yourself moving to it or using both platforms?
