    Question: What is the name of your business?
    Your Answer:  Sharretts Plating Company


    Question: Where is your business located (city & state)?  Who are the customers you serve?  What products or services does you company provide?

    Your Answer: We are located in Emigsville, PA and our customers are businesses in need of metal plating for automotive, semi-conductor, hardware, telecommunications, electronics applications and more, as we are a full-service metal plating and finishing services.


    Question: When did you start your business? Why did you decide to start your own business?
    Your Answer: Sharretts Plating began in 1925, when we saw a need for a cost-effective solution with improved quality and reduced lead times, that we believed we could fill.


    Question: Did you quit your "day job" to start your business?  How did you initially fund your business?
    Your Answer: No we didn't quit our day jobs. Charles D. Snyder (Founder) and Paul Sharretts (Future Owner) were given a large opportunity  which was funded by Tyco Electronics circa 1950, (Then Amp Inc.) to go receive college degrees in electro-chemistry at Temple University, in Philadelphia, PA, in order to help better serve the industrial metal finishing needs of the Mid-Atlantic Region for manufacturers’ needs of improved function of metal components and parts used across all sectors of business.  After completion of their degrees, Sharretts Plating (Then, Chas. D. Snyder & Sons, Inc.) was the go to metal finisher for the entire region. 


    Question: What has been the biggest challenge in running your company?
    Your Answer: Our biggest challenge in running a metal finishing company is that the type of industry we serve today is quickly becoming commoditized around the world and due to this; we face heavy price pressure and cannot afford to compete due to high taxes and burden rates of business.  Our next largest challenge is obtaining loans and credit lines to be able to grow and maintain business.


    Question: What’s been the biggest opportunity that came from owning your business?
    Your Answer: The largest opportunity that has arisen from owning our own business is the ability to pass on a financial tool and legacy for the future of the family to prosper along with being able to give back to the surrounding community.


    Question: What has surprised you most about being your own boss?
    Your Answer: Freedom to pursue a given area of the business that most interest you and allows you to put other skilled individuals into positions of accountability to run the other day to day operations.


    Question: Is there a success tactic you’d like to share that could help other business owners (i.e. implementing new software, tactic to grow sales, etc.)?
    Your Answer: Simple! Business owners need to focus on growing their businesses instead of working in the business so that one is not reacting, but being proactive about opportunities and threats that emerge. 


    Question: What’s the best piece of advice you could give to other small business owners?
    Your Answer: Like what you do and do it well or you’ll most likely fail because a lack of interest usually means that you will not put any effort or time into the task at hand.
