Question: What is the name of your business?
Your Answer: The Law Office of Lisa M. Ritacco
Question: Where is your business located (city & state)? Who are the customers you serve? What products or services does you company provide?
Your Answer: The Law Office of Lisa M. Ritacco is located in Lenni (outside of Media), PA. We provide legal services for individuals seeking to apply for social security disability or SSI benefits or who need to appeal a denial for social security disability or SSI benefits.
Question: When did you start your business? Why did you decide to start your own business?
Your Answer: The Law Office of Lisa M. Ritacco was started in November 2009. Prior to opening my own law office I practiced Social Security disability law in a large organization and in another law firm for several years. I didn’t like that clients were treated like numbers in larger firms, and cases often weren't properly developed until the last minute. I decided to open my own practice so that I could provide more personal service to my clients and have a more hands-on approach to dealing with each of my cases.
Question: Did you quit your "day job" to start your business? How did you initially fund your business?
Your Answer: Initially, I continued to work part-time handling disability cases for another law firm to provide some income to fund my business. I worked long hours juggling my part-time job with the start-up of my own business.
Question: What has been the biggest challenge in running your company?
Your Answer: My biggest challenge is taking on so many additional roles. Now, not only am I an attorney, but I am also the general office manager, employee supervisor, payroll coordinator, and advertising manager. Finding time to do each of these roles is challenging and I often feel like I am neglecting one area or another and have to play “catch-up.”
Question: What’s been the biggest opportunity that came from owning your business?
Your Answer: The ability to spend more quality time with my family has been priceless. I have two young children and owning my own business means being able to flex my hours and make up time by working at night or on the weekends if I need to. This allows me to be there for important family events, or just to take my kids to the park on a nice day.
Question: What has surprised you most about being your own boss?
Your Answer: It has surprised me that I enjoy being my own boss so much. Starting my own business was a big leap for me. I had always pictured myself working for large companies under different levels of management but I really enjoy the autonomy of working for myself.
Question: Is there a success tactic you’d like to share that could help other business owners (i.e. implementing new software, tactic to grow sales, etc.)?
Your Answer: My advice is - Don’t spread yourself too thin. Find an area to focus your work efforts and become the best in that area.
Question: What’s the best piece of advice you could give to other small business owners?
Your Answer: Don’t be afraid to try new things, even if it is outside your comfort zone. Growth and success can only happen with change and flexibility.
