    Maverick.jpgQuestion: What is the name of your business?

    Your Answer: My business is called Maverick Homes.


    Question: Where is your business located (city & state)?  Who are the customers you serve?  What products or services does you company provide?

    Your Answer: It’s located in Shermans Dale, Pennsylvania, which is in the central Pennsylvania area. We serve customers looking to build their own custom homes who don’t want to pay custom prices. We offer pre-priced plans that are customizable so that our customers can design their new homes from scratch. We have 3D modeling within our design process and can give our customers their own virtual walk through of their new home before the building process begins. We serve customers in Perry County, PA and the surrounding areas.


    Question: When did you start your business? Why did you decide to start your own business?
    Your Answer: We started up in 2007 - as I’m sure a lot of people already know, 2007 was not the ideal time to start a home building business. The economy for our industry was not great at all, so we wanted to find a niche where we could fit our business to really differentiate ourselves to prospective home builders. I’d say the beginning of Maverick Homes’ was trying to find that niche – and since we’ve found it, we’ve only been growing.

     

     


    Question:
    What has been the biggest challenge in running your company?
    Your Answer: We face a ton of challenges on a daily basis, so it’s hard to pick just one! I think that something that really stands out to me as a big challenge is, as I’d mentioned before, the economic state of our industry. It can be hard to get people to buy homes when the building market isn’t great, but I think we’ve been able to overcome that challenge by offering something different. Plus – things can only get better!


    Question: What’s been the biggest opportunity that came from owning your business?
    Your Answer: There have been many opportunities for us so far. I think a huge stand out opportunity for us is – simply enough – being able to give people their dream homes. It really is a rewarding feeling and a rewarding opportunity to be able to make people’s dream homes into a reality. That’s the number one thing that makes me want to go to work every day.


    Question: What has surprised you most about being your own boss?
    Your Answer: It’s not easy! When this business was started, I thought that being my own boss meant that things would be much simpler. A lot goes into a business; there are so many small things that I have to worry about that I had never thought about before I started. Even the smallest decisions matter way more than I thought they would. I love being my own boss and I love the challenges, but like I said – it’s definitely not a walk in the park!


    Question: Is there a success tactic you’d like to share that could help other business owners (i.e. implementing new software, tactic to grow sales, etc.)?
    Your Answer: Keep up with the times. Our designers and 3D modeling technology are advanced and I think that they give us a major advantage. If you can offer your customer something more virtual than an average floor plan, do it! It will make you stand out amongst your competitors. Really, do anything you can to go above and beyond what other people are doing. I’m a big believer in going the extra mile for the better end result.


    Question: What’s the best piece of advice you could give to other small business owners?
    Your Answer: Like I said before, go above and beyond expectations when you come out with your product or service. Figure out what your unique selling proposition is – what makes you different than your competitors – and run with it. Your business should offer something that is absolutely great and is unique to you.
