any used car dealers or people with experience importing used cars in the US?

I would like to get advice from people who have experience in selling/importing used cars in the US. The country where I am living, Japan, have many used cars being sold at very low prices that are in almost showroom condition and have few driven miles (and some cars have left-side driver seat like in the US). I have no experience in this area but would like to learn more as it could be a lucrative business. If there are any used car importers who read this thread, I would like to know about

  • export/import process from Japan to US (customs, taxes, etc)
  • DMV registration requirements
  • costs related to importing
  • any other issues

Most of the cars imported in the U S are NEW cars. It usually works the other way around that the U S
exports used cars to other countries.
The U S has more safety concerns on their cars which makes importing used car more difficult.
Since you have no experience in this area but would need to learn more.
It could be a lucrative business for someone with experience.

Thanks for the reply. I have to disagree with that. US car owners own their cars on average for about 5-7 years. Given the distances drivers travel in the US, 15,000 miles a year, maybe? This would total 75,000-105,000 miles by the time they sell their cars. Cars in Japan on average last 2-3 years and less than 25,000 accumulated miles (40,000km). I agree with the safety concerns. But if you look on the street, every other car is a foreign car with Japanese cars making up a majority. I am not talking about importing Yugos or Hyundais but BMWs, Toyotas, Nissin, etc.

My family has over thirty year in the car business; I have many contacts to dealership owners of both new and used. Although I've never imported cars I agree Japanese used cars are better taken care of then that of Americans, due to their efficiency requirements I believe. Maybe we can talk.

I oftenly buy and sell cars and I have some good and bad expereinces with dealers. I would suggest you that check twice before dealing.
