Great question. Do you have an Accountant?? An accountant would be a big help.He has lots of info.
You need to set up a procedure manual. The procedure manual with include hours, time off
vacation and in store polices. Health insurance is not required for employees.(it is an extra)
You have the option to pay the employees weekly, every two weeks, bi monthly or even monthly.
Most employees like to get paid weekly, but the procure manual will be the guide.
As far as overtime, the State of Mass will tell you the conditions under which overtime may be required for certain employees. When you fire somebody, they can collect unemployment from the State.
Hope this helps, LUCKIEST

You are obligated to pay them at least minimum wage and provide decent working conditions, all that other stuff is gravy.

1. You have to pay them at least the federal minimum wage
2. You must provide idea working conditions
3. Your business must have workers comp insurance
4. Time off for vacation (paid) is optional
5. For hourly workers they must be given standard breaks if they work an 8 hour shift
6. For hourly workers who work more than 40 hours a week they must be paid overtime
7. Doesn't matter how often you pay them but it is something you want to disclose when you hire them
8. Providing health insurance is great but not mandatory

Most federal employment laws take effect at 15 employees (full or part time), and most Massachusetts employment laws take effect at 11 employees. By state law, you are required to pay employees (either weekly or bi-weekly) your state's minium wage with time-and-a-half for overtime. You are not required to provide health insurance, time off, or other benefits.

In addition, you are required by state law to carry workers compensation regardless of the number of employees or hours worked. The Massachusetts Maternity Leave Act requires that you (or any employer with six or more employees) give eligible female employees eight weeks of unpaid leave for birth or adoption of a child. Finally, from what I'm reading, new Massachusetts Health Care Reform laws have been emerging since July, so while nothing may apply to you currently, changes are in the works to keep an eye on.

Hope this helps. Best wishes.

That was a very good question. I work with small business owners in helping them grow and protect their business. I help them get access to affordable legal services for employers who have less than 100 employees. You can go to www.prepaidlegal.com/biz/moore83 and learn more information. The service will give you full access to a law firm where you can not only get legal consultation, but legal correspondence, debt collection contract review, and document review. Our service does for your legal expenses what your health care insurance does for your medical bills.

The traditional contribution is $100 for the employee only or 50% of the lowest cost premium. There are a few plans that now lower the employer contribution to 25%. But, this is only from a few plans.
