There is a system existing in USA for more than a decade now and perfecting. Some people have earned financial freedom thru this proven system. System is solid like franchise and that is working for qualified people who are ready to work hard for few years and create equity... I am following footsteps of some very successful business-owners having sprawling business all over world, trying ride the e-commerce boom worldwide...

Absolutely, there is nothing called easy money, there should not be some legally. What I am talking about is building equity instead of running in small business all along. I agree some of the small business owner like you, wants to grow but not majority of them. Many run small business just like job, micro managing every thing and working whole day...

You know the funny part, I've got many business ideas, but not enough money to achieve all my dreams.

Natural Elements is my first e-commerce, hope I will have some more ;-)

The biggest risk was walking away from the security of an employment situation. I had a good salary, great benefits, was fully-vested, and well-treated. I knew my work inside-out, and probably could have "coasted" to retirement on existing knowledge and reputation alone -- and then relaxed on a nice boat somewhere.

But NOOOOOO . . . I just had to start my own firm, didn't I?

Hum you like boats? I which one day I can buy one ;-)

Sometime we like more the adventure than great salary, great benefits etc... When coming to the US I dropped all my French social benefits, etc...but another hand I am with the woman I love and together we created 2 businesses :-)

Well, I guess to answer the post question, and to quote the old adage, the greatest risk is not taking one.
I started my business three years ago and it has grown exponentially each year. Up until now, I have remained at my employers for that "security" paycheck, all the while juggling my business in the off hours. But now, those two worlds are colliding. I can no longer do both. I have used a LOC to get the business running, and I guess that's a risk, but I think there is a greater risk at this point: the risk of my health (both physical and emotional) of deteriorating if I continue at my employers. I've done that work for 15 years and have hated it for 10. I only stayed for the pay. But I now understand that money is nothing if you dislike what you do. Better to take a pay cut, take the risk and lose the steady paycheck, and do what you love. Life is too short to be miserable.

Welcome to this community Frazzle,

When I decided to run on my own, making money isn't the principal goal, but to prove myself what I was capable. I worked more than 15 years for employers in my life, and like you said "life is too short" so I wanted to take my own future particulary in this state where it seems like everybody are under high pressure even when it is not necessary. Corporation wants everything, paying you less as much as they can, and ask you to be high skilled, in my opinion it can be that way.

Anyway, I am very happy to run on my own since many years ago, and I will never work for somebody else. ;-)

Thank you for the warm welcome. I'm glad to be here.
You're right, there is too much pressure. If the war in Iraq, global warming and climate change wasn't enough, stress at the job is the icing on the cake. I may not be able to control the war or the climate, but I can control my own destiny by striking out on my own and leaving the job.

Hey, we may be getting off track here, but if the climate concerns you, there ARE things you can do: support clean renewable energy. Not sure how much you can actually DO yourself at this point but you can invest in solar (CSIQ); fuel cells (FCEL); or ethanol (VSE).

(Thought I'd share the tip since part of the original question was about going green and these stocks are doing well and can put some holiday $$ into your pocket right away) :-)

Hi Frazzle, I must commend you on your hard work. Keeping a day job while doing your business on the side is very tough. I, too, am trying to start a business while keeping a job I do not like that much. Do you mind writing about your experiences of setting up your business and how you grew it? And if you don't mind, what time of business are you in? I see from your profile that you are in retail/wholesale. That is an area I am interested in as well. Perhaps I can learn from some of your experiences. If you prefer to take this offline, please email me at todsu168@yahoo.com
