Operating Capital Needed for New Business

My business partner and I started a wine importing business this year with $80K. We also secured a $15K line of credit and a $10K loan from one bank. The structure of the business is established; federal permits have been granted, state licenses have been granted in NY, NJ and PA, contacts for suppliers are established, and warehousing and distribution is set up. We have imported a few hundred cases of wine which has been very popular with retail outlets and restaurants. And we have generated a small amount of revenue.

Now, we need $200K to hire 2 sales reps and import additional wine. I also need to start collecting a salary. I have spent the year without taking a salary while starting the business. I would also like to be able to provide health benefits, which may require additional capital.

I have approached B of A about loans, but was told that we need to be generating in excess of $800K in annual revenue to acquire that large of a loan. My reply to them was, "if I was generating $800K in revenue, I wouldn't need a loan."

I have been approached by foreign investors to supply the funds, but that would require giving a large part of the company to the investors.

My hope is that I could acquire a 7 year loan for the $200K and expand the business pretty quickly. Is that possible? If so, what steps do I take?

rwill, Anything is possible. Realistic, that's another question. The next step is to network.
I like your statement from BofA "if I was generating $800K in revenue,
I wouldn't need a loan."

Why hire full time sales reps and be saddled with payroll and benefits? There are freelance sales people out there that sell your product for a small piece of the action of the total sale. This way you may need half of what you are asking for.

How much is "giving a large part of the company to the investors" ? (percentage-wise)

If you did let another investor buy in...how much of your soul are they asking for? If its 20% or less you may want to jump on it.

Are you incorporated...holding company stock? Have friends and family who may want to invest for stock?

CorpCons08 may have some ideas here in the forum as well.

We considered utilizing sales reps who work with many importers/distributors but, decided against it when we learned that our products would not get much sales/marketing emphasis in a portfolio of wines. We also considered paying reps on a commission basis only. That is a more likely possibility. In this scenario, we will need to have more wines to promote to make it feasible for a rep to want to sell for our company.

The large part of the company was 50% for a $250K investment. As it stands, my business partner and I each own 50% of the company. We decided that we did not want give that much of the company to investors.

We set up the company as an LLC. We have been reluctant to ask for loans or investments from friends or family, but may consider it as a last resort. We could probably raise $75-100K, but would prefer to raise funds by other avenues.

Is it unlikely to secure a loan from a bank for $200K? If so, what are other possible options?

Try applying for an SBA loan because with this you are able to use your projections to show how you will repay the loan as opposed to the traditional where you have to show the ability to pay and that is why theu were saying that you have to have to have revenues in excess of $800M

JV Financial's offer didn't work for me because my businees partner and I own an equal stake in the company. JV Financial informed me that his company "will not have co signers/multiples. Only one person with majority ownership."

If he wishes to elaborate, I will let him speak for himself.

Hi,

Your request seems reasonable enough for the investors I met at: http://www.ez-financial-solutions.com

They can provide you with the funding you require with terms allowing you up to 26 years for repayment; at bank rates!

Funding can be arranged in as little as 14 days. Check them out you might be very pleased with what they have to offer.

Good luck!

In my original post I was looking for information to acquire operating capital for my business. Even though there have been a few good suggestions, I have not yet found the answer here. When I do, I will label it answered. Thanks again for your suggestions.

When I discovered this forum a week ago, I was a little wary of all of the "too good to be true" offers. Nevertheless, I responded to most of them to get as much information as possible.

I have been most impressed with what CorpCons08 has to offer. He is the consummate professional and has a well thought out program to pursue financing. So, I have decided to work with him and his group.

If I am able to secure the funding I need to expand my business, I will report back.

Thanks to everyone for your comments/suggestions.

Happy Holidays!

Unfortunately, I selected the wrong financial consultant to assist me in securing a loan for operating capital.

I am still looking for $2-300K to expand my business. The details of my business and situation are in my initial post.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate them.
