Hello,

I am a small business owner that provides VoIP and High Speed Internet services to residential and business customers. We just started providing these services through wholesale agreements with larger companies that have the infrastructure and capital.

While our services are top notch, I am unsure about tax laws when it comes to VoIP and High Speed Internet. While Rhode Island (my state of formation) has a Public Utility commission they do not cover the area of VoIP and DSL.

Does anyone have any experience in taxing services that are offered in such a manner as mine are. We are a small company so even a telephone call with a lawyer is out of our budget...

The internet seems to be of little recourse and I want my business to remain legal.

Thanks for the insight.

You are required to collect and pay sales tax on telecommunication services (see State of Rhode Island Division of Taxation Sales and Use Tax Regulation SU 07-129). If you're like most other states, you have to pay 911 fees for VoIP, too. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
