Dear Mobileman--
Your post is comparing apples and oranges. The three entities you identified as 'merchant account' are not merchant accounts at all.
Papal is a generic payment service, not a merchant account. It mimics a merchant account in some ways, but also differs from a merchant account in many very meaningful and crucial ways.
Authorize.net is a payment gateway, not a merchant account. Auth net LINKS with a merchant account (two different providers) to facilitate payment processing. But all by itself, authorize.net does nothing, much like a computer without software does nothing.
Global is a 3rd party communications network, either front end, back end, or both, utilized by many payment processors. It is NOT a merchant account.
