I've created my company's website for years using Microsoft software (first FrontPage, later Web Expressions, as FrontPage was discontinued.) FrontPage was a little easier to use, but Web Expressions isn't too difficult to master. This has enabled me to create my own website (www.cutcomp.com) and readily change and update it over the years. It takes a little work and effort, but I like doing the work and it has enabled me to do a lot of search engine optimization myself. Our website comes up very well on Google and other search engines for important search terms, and over the years our website has generated a lot of business for us.

So we basically pay our domain name registration fees, and then $20 bucks a month for someone to host the website, and then we have done all the website construction ourselves. I like this approach myself, but I don't know if this approach would work for everyone.

I wouldn't advice you to go for Office Live as I have seen others do. Office Live has a good program but their servers will load forever. editing you pages and adding features to them will be an endless nightmare for you. My experience with those sites is limited. What I can tell you is that they are "cookie cutter" sites. They function very well and I believe the tools are very easy to use. However, they don't take the place of a custom designed site. I currently design sites on a consultant basis.
