I just got a MacBook Pro and noticed that it doesn't come with virus software? I've heard of Intego, Norton, and McAfee...which should I buy? Also, if it matters I do not run any windows software (e.g. powerpoint, word etc. on this computer). I mainly use this for web surfing and managing my online pictures, etc. I'm getting confused with the options, and only want to buy one. Which should I get?

Do not purchase: Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky. Norton will embed itself into the hard drive and corrupt the operating system. Kaspersy has an open back door that trojans can compromise. McAfee has so many 'things' in it that it will kick you off of your home network and slow down the CPU.

I use ESET Nod 32. go to ESET.com and choose your product, you can pay with a credit card, and then download. If you purchase 2 years you save quite a bit. This product runs in the background and does not interefere with your operating system or other installed programs.

Trend Micro is not bad, and I have used it before but I like the ESET better.

Thank you for your helpful response DomainDiva. I never thought about the software slowing my computer down. All good points. I'm going to go to ESET.com right now..

Macs don't get viruses as often as PCs do. It's because they are designed for home-use while PCs are used by various governmental and educational institutions. The only "anti-virus software" I have on my Mac is the firewall ProteMac NetMine and that's enough.

While macs may not 'get viruses as often as PC's do' the virus code business is alive and well and macs are now special targets. More and more virus code is being written for macs as they are seen as an untapped market by thieves.

I have always used Norton or McAfee on the Macs I have own despite the fact that hackers were ignoring Macs for the longest time. That's not true anymore.

I think either software will be fine but the thing to remember is be careful downloading free or cheap programs from sources you don't know or can't trust. No one every got a virus from store bought software or applications.

You should have more than enough space on your system to accommodate either. Advise is free from the Mac store.

DD,

It doesn't look like it is available for the Mac platform. Figures.

I forgot about Symantec, it is another good one

As some have already stated, Macs generally don't get viruses and as much as everyone tries to say that viruses are coming, that just isn't the case. The odds of you getting one on a Mac are quite slim unless you a whole lot of downloading applications from the internet.

That being said, McAfee's Virex for Mac works well, but in the time I've used it (a few years) I've never found a virus. It does detect them because I manually downloaded a virus just to scan the file, and it did find it and delete it.
