That is a GREAT question. How long have you been in business??
How large or how much was the carpet cleaning job (in dollars)??
What good will it do to act as a collection agency??
Do you have a Lawyer?? Can you or the lawyer put a LIEN on their house??
Good luck, LUCKIEST

A collection agency may be your best bet. Be sure any agency you choose only gets a percentage of the fee they collection. You may also want to set a limit on how much they can discount your invoice.

Why don't you start getting paid like plumbers and AC people do, on the spot when the work is done. Set up your people with an office contact to verify both checks and credit cards. whenever I get my carpets cleaned those people always want their money as soon as the job is completed.

I will send 3 certified letters, one each week, if the bill is not paid, open a small claim in your state, you don't need attorney for smalll claims. You may have little fees to pay.

If you did the job for a company, contact the city licence, etc...

I'd go see the customer and ask, face-to-face, "How come you haven't paid me yet?"

If they are withholding payment because they were dissatisfied with the work, you'll learn what (if anything) you can do to correct the problem and get your money.

If they are withholding payment because they have financial difficulties (and you simply happen to be the easiest creditor to ignore), appearing before them in-person will make it tougher to ignore you -- and you may get paid right then. Asking in person also gives you the chance to be empathetic to their situation, yet assertive. A carpet cleaning business grows on the basis of referrals, so think about what you want your word-of-mouth rep to be -- not just among your "perfect" customers, but among the "less-than-perfect" ones as well. It's probably better to be known as a business that is willing to work something out with a customer, rather than an enemy who hounds them with phone calls, letters, threats, and lawsuits.

quality,

I see this post is kind of old. If you have not been able to collect, please contact my firm. We have a division that works on the collections for companies and can take further legal action against them if necessary. d.skolnick@skolnick-associates.com.

h1. -- Customer Does Not Pay...
You may want to consider PrePaid Legal
Services. While PPL isn't the end-all solution to legal
problems, you will have an Attorney to consult with about this legal
issue or any other.

The attorney may also decide to place a phone call or send the customer a legal letter on your behalf.

It's definately a place to start!

Quality, please investigate PPL very carefully if you're thinking it might be a solution to anything.
