Hi: I'm an indepent marketing consultant who works with other collaborators. I'm looking for project management software that will optimize stuff I'm currently doing in spreadsheets of documents:

  • Tracking time (hours per project/hours per contributor)
  • Tracking budgets
  • Creating project plans
  • Creating online document repositories
  • Creating project sites

From my small amount of research, it seems like Vertabase and RoboHead may be the best packages. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with either package. If so, can you tell me what you like or dislike about it?

Also, if i don't go that route, does anyone have a great timetracking solution? I am looking for something that's pretty robust, as I would like to customize it by client, project, type of work, and billable rate.

I have been using Zoho http://www.zoho.com. It works pretty well for me, it is on-line and free.

Microsoft Office Project Standard has a 'multiple level undo' feature that lets you experiment with different scenarios.

I use BaseCamp to manage my company and employees and projects as well. However from the original post I was 'assuming' that he was looking for a relational database type of project management.

There is also something called @task. Complicated and expensive to say the least.

Hello, I use SimplyPM and not only is it very reasonable, but pretty robust too. I've used several products and am a certified Project Managment Professional but for ease of use and bang for the buck try them out at http://www.simplypm.com. MS Project is also very good, but you've got to really get into project management to use their what-if scenarios.

Hope this helps.

We built our own custom system which accomplished all of those things and more, however Microsoft Project is a really good tool also.

We have both project and time management solutions which can stand alone or be part of a larger integrated solution:

You might want to consider looking at BillQuick (BQE Software). Works exceptionally well for many of my clients.

For me, MS Project is too complex for planning simple projects, too feeble for planning major projects, and too proprietary for planning projects where any of the information has to be ported to or from multiple platforms and applications (which would be important to you, it seems). Even so, I have about 120 clients for whom it's the in-house "standard" project planning tool. As a tracking tool, I don't much care for MS Project at all -- it doesn't have the design or functionality to facilitate the type of resource tracking that's required in a typical project environment (and I think you'd have the same trouble using it to manage the multiple client scenario you describe). Most of my clients had to have custom interfaces written to get planning data out of Project and into some other decent tracking software to make that aspect manageable. (That dual-tool approach can get expensive.)

I guess the reason I feel MS Project is ok is that I really do not use commercial project management software too heavily. I have developed an operating system that I and my associates use and we have a project manager built in. I was just trying to help make a recommendation fr those looking for a good commercial software. Thank you for your analysis of the software Lighthouse.

Understood . . . it's the "multiple resources collaborating on multiple projects" part of fakeblond's situation that concerned me. MS Project can do it -- it's just the way it does it that makes it a real pain to track time, material, and/or resources through the multiple linked project infrastructure (and all that has to be set up right from the very start).

It's good to know these things if anybody asks me, thats why I love reading posts from other people. What do you use for project management? As I said, we have built an all-in-one type of system that also keeps our system secure from employees getting into things that they shouldn't. :)
