How do State Taxes affect my Internet sales from Canada?

I work for a Technology company in Canada, and many of our Internet sales come from the US. Do we have to charge State Taxes on our products? How does this work? Do the purchasers pay the tax? Sorry to sound so ignorant in this Global age, but I'm having difficulty finding definative answers on this subject, and our Company really needs to understand how the tax laws work Internationally. If anyone can help with this, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks
