My wife and I are looking at starting up a small printing business. Both places are getting ready to shutdown. One is retiring and the other was never there to run a business. We are in need of advice on equipment needed for printing/copying company and maybe an angel investor. Credit is not the best, but in the mid 600's.

Thanks for taking the time. We are a small town of about 3000. What equipment would you suggest you need to just start up a printing/copying company. We will probably outsource any major printing.

You have to look at your market where is your buisness located do you ahve any compition etc. For a small print shop atleast 1 one clor press and 1 2-color press wither you decide on old equipment still in use like ab dicks or true 2 color presses like itek, robi etc. then small production plates like polyester or metal.
ab dicks are a great press ran one for many many ears there workhorses guess just have to set a budget and shop alot.

my recommendation in the interst of conserving your capital...buy used equipment...there's plenty of it around as businesses are going under.

have you ever attempted to use software programs that can do any printing job you need within seconds and make it look professional without too much expense?

Yes i have but when your dealing with the public most professional companys are going to use professional software i like corel x4 will do just about anything any customer will want you to do but it is pricey about 400 bucks. if your worried about design iwould be happy to do some design work for you at a discounted rate so you would be able to mark it up and make money on it for awhile until you get off the ground better.
hope that helps

Well if that is going to be who you use what is stopping your clients from doing the samething and cutting you out all together? You need to offer them (your customers) the printing service if you plan on having a printshop. Or maybe im lost on what you want to do in a buisness

Greetings.

What type of printed products are you selling? Many people are not aware that the printing industry is very specific especially when getting down to workflow particulars including equipment and software. It is likely that a great deal of your print jobs will be outsourced especially while you are in the startup phase. I have made a career in the print industry, specifically prepress operations while also independently consulting and brokering for media related small businesses. I would like to learn more about your venture and offer you some advise as well as highlight some things that you will want to take into account.

SCORE is the Service Corp of Retired Executives, you can find them online at http://www.score.org/index.html. I believe that Luckiest is a SCORE counselor.
