Thank you all for the info, I was a little skeptical about B2G institute simply because I do not have 3500 dollars floating around. Does anyone know of another business consultant type basis that will work pro-bono? I am just trying to get my foot in the door, and hopefully I can get a government contract.

I'd suggest contacting your local SBA and the technical college in your area.

Check with your local SBA and technical college. They will help you navigate through the Federal maze for a smaller fee than B2G.

Good afternoon! Someone mentioned they were going to attend the training session in December.. how was it? Our small business has been getting the run around from B2G. We were told dates then they changed as well as the location. We are really on the fence if we want to go ahead. We signed up 4 people and are really frustrated. We are a Woman Owned Small Business and have been around for 20 years. We're just wondering if we've been sold a bag of good. Any comments are appreciated. Thanks

I've also received the B2G invitation to a NY event, and thanks for the description - I don't have time to be insulted. Warning also, I received calls from Alpha Publishing Inc. (API) inviting me to pay between $499 and $1499 to advertise in their "Government Set Aside Directory" where gov agencies supposedly go to look for small businesses. They hung up mid conversation when I said I didn't have that kind of money to spend on speculation. When I asked the SBA about them, I was told they were "Bullcrap." Now that's straight talk.

But I did sign up for the GSA Small Business event coming up in March. There I should learn - for free - how to jump through the hoops of govt contracts, yes? Has anyone done this? Is it worth it for a teeny sole proprietorship struggling to stay above water?

Appreciate any feedback.

Your best bet for breaking into government sales is to find government agencies you want to target, call them or look on their website to see if/when they have seminars or training sessions on how to sell to them. Many government agencies do. You get two benefits out of such sessions (which are usually free or low cost): You get the details on how to work with the agencies, and, by talking with the government people at the meeting, you can start the name recognition (them recognizing you) process. Government buyers are like any other: they prefer to deal with businesses they know and trust. Price is important, but buyers are going to be reluctant to buy from a company they haven't heard of even if they are the low bid.

I got one of their mailings for free seminars near me, so I Googled them which led me here.

This sounds a lot like various grants scams out there, the most similar one being National Grants Conference. They advertise access to "free government money you never have to pay back". There's a free high pressure seminar leading to a paid seminar (the $3500 mentioned here), then they give you a runaround. In addition to the $3,500 they try to get your credit card number for "support services". (I'm a professional grantwriter for nonprofits, so I checked them out. And by the way, there is no "free grant money" for individuals or businesses. Any ad you see for free grant money is a scam)

Here are a few clues about B2G:
First, the comments below about the cost and service.
Second, if you go to their website, there's no address or names, just 800 numbers. They're totally anonymous and hard to trace. A legit business will have an address and contacts.
Third, as someone mentioned, the SBA will do this for you cheap, as will the small business centers located in many community colleges. If you need more information on government contracts, call your local congressional office for direction.
Fourth, B2G's mailings are indiscriminate. They don't care what kind of business you're in, they just want you to come to a seminar.
Fifth, the reality test. If it were this easy, wouldn't everybody be doing it and getting rich?

I am happy to report that I got my first government contract without a GSA in place however I did complete a past performance rating through DUNS which helped me. That is an important initial step. I gave them 19 references. They sent each reference a questionaire and then rated me based on how the references respond. Because I had that rating in place it helped to speed up the process.

Thanks MKW.123 for your words of wisdom. I also suggest that if you sign up with B2G and give them a charge card make sure that they credit you in a timely manner. I happened to put their payment on an American Express Card. I called American Express when the payment was due to let them know that I was going to be reimbursed. They told me that because they knew this they would not charge me interest on the money and would file a dispute. Originally B2G told me they would not reimburse for 30 days. Once American Express filed the dispute they submitted the credit immediately.

I also went to the "free seminar" and have to agree with most of the comments. It is a high pressure sales pitch and nothing you say is really heard by the speaker. I had been receiving emails from different companies and thought I would see what this was all about. My opinion, save your money and do some research.

Go to the SBA and http://www.score.org for advice and assistance.

What I did get out of the seminar was that I have been doing all the right things like registering with the CCR, I also registered with ORCA - Online Representations and Certifications Application (ORCA) http://www.orca.bpn.gov

Most if not all the information is free and can be found by doing your research. I am just starting my business and have been a contractor supporting the federal government for 8 years and 20 years with the DoD military service.

Also goto FedBizOpps https://www.fbo.gov/index

Once you have yourself - Company registered you can look for opportunities to go after. There is more to do but I think this should give some people looking for advice a place to start.

Good luck,
