Personally, I think borrowing money is not always the answer. Have you considered other options of generating revenue to earn the money you need?

When I was a single mom, I cleaned houses, waited tables, and tutored classes at the college. I would babysit for the neighors. I sold some of my furniture. I clipped coupons and recycled my cans. Anything and everything I could think of....I did it. I know its hard to work and pay a babysitter (if your children are not school age). Have you heard of Dave Ramsey? He has several books out on how to get out of debt and obtain financial freedom. Maybe you could check with your local library.

If I were you, I would register my businness to get a Merchan Tax ID number, write a business plan and explain how you will be offering your product for sale and what will be your margin or prospective eraning forescast. Then I would go to any other financial institution but not to the credit union, and obtain or try to get a small business loan... even if you don't have 2 years running a register business, they may give you up to $20,000 to get you off the ground... make sure to do your research, regster your company with the state and write a really good business plan...
Get a book explaining how to write a business plan so you would know what to do and what to expect... also look sharp when going to a bank to talk to a small business representative...

I'm familiar with both of the artists you mentioned. As you no doubt know, Ms. Brown spent five years working in low-level jobs at galleries and displaying her work at street fairs. Eventually she posted her portfolio on a website and began selling a few products there, but it was still another four years after that before she really made any money or attracted the attention that led to the licensing agreement that caused things to take off. Today, you're basically where she was 17 years ago as an artist.

My point is this -- if you're really serious about the business/career you described, you may be better served by a long term plan that moves you in that direction every day. It doesn't have to be in giant steps -- enough little steps for enough days in a row can get your anywhere you want to go.

With that strategy in mind, the question you ask everyday is not "How can borrow $12.3K?" but rather, "How can I take care of myself and my children for another 24 hours, AND move one step closer to my goal?" As Elite1 pointed out, ANYTHING legal and moral that allows you to do that is acceptable at this point.

To answer the question you asked, my honest opinion is no, there is probably not a legitimate lender that will offer you a loan right now. You noted that it's not your fault your credit is bad, and that your ex caused it -- but a banker will figure that you made the decision to marry him, and will recognize that being in business for yourself involves several equally significant decisions (most of which you have no prior experience with). What guarantee does a banker have that you'd make sound decisions on those issues? (How do YOU know you would?) That's the challenge you face.

I truly believe that driving toward your goal day by day, rather than borrowing money and putting up a shot from half-court, would give you the skills, experience, and resources you need -- and the very best chance of getting your finances back on track and achieving your dreams.

I wish you the very best.

Those are all great ideas but most of them can't be done without a car. Also it's hard to save up anything I need every penny I have just to scrape by.

Zarante, How much does a merchant ID cost? How do I go about getting it (what steps do you take?) How long does it take? Also I have 2 pairs of clothes when I left my Ex I left with literally nothing we don't even have beds to sleep in, So how can I look "sharp" as you say without any way to buy clothes. I can't seem to make money without money. I feel very very trapped in an impoverished situation and I know my way out but no one seems willing to help me.

Merchant ID, EIN number, etc can be done online. I would suggest going using a government (.gov) so it is either free or really cheap. I know people who have gotten their businesses set up through other companies that charged $300 what they could have done themselves in 20 minutes for $30 dollars. But whatever you do, make sure you read everything thoroughly.

Also, how are you selling your pictures online? Your own site? Through a site that sells art? Promotional services?

You can get the EIN- Employer Identification number from http://www.IRS.gov

in the search box type in form ss-4, that is the application and it is FREE from the Government.

This allows you to sell to everyone and not have to give out your Social security number.

You can also use it to open a business bank account.

Bank of America has free small business checking with no fees.

About selling online, use Paypal, there is no setup or monthly fee and they take roughly 3% of the sales, but you don't have to come up with any money up front.

Best of luck and success to you.

If you don't have a website, try posting them on myspace or any of the free social site and use your paypal account to collect the money.

Bank Of America has no fees for 6 months. After that they charge you small service fees, generally 30 dollars a month. Atleast that was the plan I was offered when I used them.

I do web design so if you need advice on promoting yourself on the web or a website, just contact me at ddixon@my-lan.us

Travesty,

I was just suggesting that you try not to get in deeper financial trouble than you are already in. With a loan comes more bills. I wish you the best of luck and am willing to help in any way I can.

Note: these are low resolution images I do this as a precaution to prevent people from getting my work free.
