Hello,

I recently started creating websites for bussinesses, but I have not had to much luck getting clients. I am currently in college and want to do some side work till I graduate. Anyone have any suggestions?

Here is a site I made recently for a school district in Alaska. www.iditarodsd.org let me know what you think. Any feedback is appreciated.

Jaclyn

Hi,
You did a nice job on the site. I find it to be colorful and easy to navigate! You mentioned that you want to make some cash. Trust me you will not get rich with this offer but it may help. I have a site www.designerhealthnet.com. The site is a personal training, personal nutritional planning and smoking cessation site. Part of the way I have increase business is this. I pay 20% of any sales to the personal who referred them to me. Hence, you bring me paying customer and I paypal you money or write you check. Again it is not a get rich paln but every little bit helps. All you have to do is spend some time on my site, get to know it, tell people about it. When I ask them how they found me and they say you, I pay you. If you interested let me know.

Keep up the good work and good luck in shool. I have two in college as well.

Jaclyn,

The site looks really nice, but I can definitely see some things that could be improved upon from an SEO standpoint. For instance, all alternate text is missing in the images. We have several university students working for BlitzLocal. If you would be interested in becoming an analyst for us so you can learn more about how to get clients, retain clients and offer them a full package of design, SEO, etc., please contact me. I might be able to hook you up.

The first thing I noticed is that the dark background with light colored font are difficult on the eyes. Generally, a white or off white background are preferable when it comes to holding the attention of your site visitors. I read some about this in a book called "The Soul in Cyberspace." Although this book is primarily directed at Christians on the Internet, he goes into studies which have been conducted on how different forms of media effect the user's brain and vision.

The most effective would be dark colored font (such as navy blue or black) on light colored background (white, light grey, light beige, offwhite) using Arial or Times New Roman style. Sounds boring I know, but you want what reader and visitor retention over "cool" or "different" when it comes to graphic design and aesthetics.

Also, you say this about yourself: I
am a Sports Nutritionist, Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Fitness
Therapist, Reiki Master, and a B.S. in Recreation Management. My
passion is assisting people in their pursuit of health and fitness.

All I can say is WOW! You have a ton of experience to draw from when it comes to an effective blog. You need to start a blog and pull from all of your knowledge and experience to build a readership and get them subscribed to RSS and coming back daily.

Btw, do you see the difference between this font and the other that I was using? ;)

Hope this helps. I will be happy to answer any other questions you have.

I would recommend Wordpress (http://wordpress.com/) as a great place to start a blog and connect to your other site. You can also start a site on a social networking blog platform such as xanga.com and build your friend's list then link to your wordpress blog and website as you build your friend's at xanga.
