Looking for a savy, creative, Webdesigner

Looking for an individual who has creative as well as technical savy, it seems hard to find both characteristics in one individual in this field unless you work with a team of designers who specialize in one area... and this gets too expensive.

I'm working with a decent budget, but not a blank check. I want someone who can help me achieve my vision without breaking the bank.

I would appreciate any recomendations.

Hi,

This is my first posting and I'm happy to see this kind of community at BoA.

I am a versatile developer with experience in website and graphic design, programming, and databases. Here is a list of technologies I'm fluent in:
.NET (ASP, VB, and C#)
VB6
PHP and MySQL
XHTML
CSS
Photoshop
Flash
MSSQL 2000-2008

I provide effective and affordable web and marketing solutions as well as custom software to meet specific needs. I also provide domain registration and web hosting. Contact me if you are in need of database work but don't have a budget for a full-time DBA.

The link to my website is http://www.webspotinsite.com

It needs to be updated with more recent clients but here are a few I'm working on now:
http://www.servicebroward.com (an advertising site, similar to Yellow Book)
http://delectrician.webspotinsite.com (a subdomain on my site for now but a work in progress for a local electrician)

I've done custom projects for Ford Motor Company and other companies too that required integrations to other departments and existing technologies.

I hope I can be of service and understand and will work with you in these trying times.

Regards,

Bill

Dear intechspecial,

I would bet that Spartucus has the good sense to choose someone based on their talents which I, along with others have made available to view. I'm pretty sure too that he might choose someone based on the grace and professionalism they portray, whether it is in a forum, in their design practice, or in their business tactics.

Good luck.

I didn't want to dignify your follow up remarks with a reply, however I will say this: We have actually been very busy with our business, and have not contacted anyone since I posted this request. We have had tremendous growth this year despite the economic slowdown. Your comment is unappreciated and rather immature. I sense allot of anger and hostility here, perhaps it's displaced...but don't make me the depository of it. Any self respecting confident artist or tech would have excercised more discretion in their mannerism. You have made things easier for us however, your display of poor character has eliminated you from the pool of potential resources as we examine further who we will spend our money with.

But, but...what about me? I'd be happier if you were 2nd and I was first. Good idea, huh?!?!

Seriously, let's bid by competing for the best design. Maybe we'll let "mean guy" play too.

Here are the rules:

1) Spartucus picks the theme
2) Pure XHTML 1.0 Strict and CSS
3) No stock photos - only custom graphics that are not creeped from the web
4) Compatible with IE, FF, Chrome, and Safari
5) 1 Home page layout. Content is not important but capturing the theme is

Extra credit for SEO and database driven content.

Spartacus -

Please allow me to offer my sincere apology for my remarks, they were most certainly not meant to show anger or hostility.

I try to have fun in what I do, and try to lighten things up with humor, unfortunately some think I am being sarcastic and do not realize I am just trying to lighten everyone up with a smile or a little chuckle.

Please forgive me for not explaining this in my post, and once again I offer my sincere apology for taking up this thread with something that could be seen as hostile or immature.

I most certainly should have exercised more discretion, but I thought that it would be ok as most have understood that I am only offering my sense of humor. I did not think there would be any harm in poking fun at my own company, and I most certainly meant nothing more then to use a creative way for putting people at ease in what I do.

I will refrain from commenting further in any of your threads, and I wish you the best in all that you do.

Once again, please accept my sincere apology for not stating that my true intentions were just to put people at ease, and to poke fun at my own company.

Sincerely,

hi,

We are a pair that cosists of a designer and a coder(it also helps that we are neighbors and also are crazy enough to have four kids each) which makes us not only techie and savy but also border line insane. With that said, what we offer is a low cost solution to your specific needs. The way we approach any potential client is with a sample of the website that they would like to see. Provide us with some information containing the vision for your site(color schemes, functionality, business logic(is there a process that needs to be encapsulated with in the site), content management, and so on. We certainly pride ourselves on reaching the level that our client desires. Send us some info and we will gladly put together a sample site specific to your idea, and from there you can decide if you would like to pursue our relationship. We do appreciate your time and hope to work further with youl on this project. Thanks .

Michael-

I think its odd that your comment discrediting my intent was removed? By You? or perhaps by the community monitors, assuming they exist...I would imagine that they do somewhere...

First of all I didn't find any humor in your comments, not because I don't have a sense of humor, but because there wasn't any in what you said. It was insulting to me and the others who take this board seriously as a resourse for professionals. I appreciate your apology, but you cannot treat this site like a dating site, we are business people looking for other business people to fill a need. Just because I didn't respond to you, or respond in a timely manner, did not mean I was not interested. We all work at a different pace...

Anyway- To amuse myself, I did take a look at your website and your work and saw the list of sites you have created... I went further and clicked on a few of them, and honestly, even if you had been on your best behavior, your work does not represent anything I would consider for my business. When I said Savy, I meant "SAVY", "PROGRESSIVE" , "INNOVATIVE" none of the sites you had used any flash, the homepages had little character and did not draw you in, functionally they looked sound, but again, they were missing graphic inovation, movement, color, texture....they were very basic and reflect what we already have now.

On a side note, I found some european web sites developed in France and Germany which blew me out of the water. Regardless, I would not consider a firm outside the states but they are doing some amazing things over there. There are many talented designers here, and I'm sue one of them will be able to deliver what I need.

After next week, I plan to contact several of you kind folks who have reached out to me, I will also put a list of criteria together to explain what I want and need so that you will know if it's something you are both interested and qualified to do.

Thanks to everyone who has reached out.

It might help if you could add a note or two to your profile so that people can validate that you are a business owner.

It is not often that I have this type of extreme agression because of a comment, but I have found most agression like this comes from someone that is not a valid business owner.

Please update your profile, so that we here in this community can validate who you are.

Thank you.

Michael,

I'm new to this forum, and, in time, I may fill in my profile and business information as I see fit and feel more comfortable here...I'm re-evaluating whether this is even a place I want to be, after encountering the likes of you....

Act professional, and you will be treated that way! Act hostile, and be prepared to face the same.
You were out of line wih your original comments. You cannot disguise insults as "humor" and expect to get away with it, so don't try. Removing your original comment doesn't erase the fact that you said what you did.

Meanwhile, I won't be bullied by the likes of you who question my legitimacy or need validation to satisfy their own "need to know"...

I don't have time to waste in a verbal combat with someone who sounds more like a used car salesman than a webmaster!

You need not reply with three messages to every one of mine. Step back and Look at how you reacted to my honest assesment of the fact that your style and product don't meet my requirements. There was no agression on this thread until you tried to discredit my motives. So now you feel rejected because because I did not think your work matched the vision I have for my new site, and you label that as agression...

Just get over it, and move on. I'm through with this discussion. I am however encouraged by some of the other kind replies and will not let this poor experience with you spoil my quest.

Good Bye

In all honesty, this all would have came to a hault if he would have just tooken my apology.

But rather then take my apology, he further attacked me throwing more accusations as well as attacking my character and my work.

Guys, Let's all take a deep breath here and focus on our priorities. As upset as I was, I was intrigued my Michael's determination to make things right, and for his passionate replies (even if there were a few too many : ) )

I came upon his profile on his website and read through his bio. And as I did, I realized he has endured quite a tough up-hill battle with his health and other challenges life has thrown his way. And, despite all that, he has been altruistic and has given back to his community and people less fortunate. I salute that element of his character and his desire to help others and give where he can.

We can all agree to disagree, we won't always see things in the same way, however, let's all move on and take care of business and the things that matter to all of us.

Last week, one of my best friends was diagnosed with malignant brain cancer, he has two kids a wife and a dog. He's fighting for his life. I couldn't sleep for two days when I heard... and I was beside myself at the thought of losing him. Times like this, I have to step back and just appreciate the people we have in our lives and all the good things that are there, and hope that there is some chance to save him.

Hi Spartucus & Community,
Welcome, I am new to the community too, I commend you in handling difficult people, I had an experience miscommunicating with same person. In either case, I too am looking for help with my web site, through your request I found at least (2) that may be able to assist me. I am working with Homestead, but I find 49.99 a month a little steep. They do offer unlimited pages and I do like their templates, although Im doing mine from scratch.
I am also askin for some help, please email me triplert3@msn.com thank you

Hi Everyone,

I'm finally devoting some time on this project, Thank you all for being patient with me. I've done some research and have come up with a basic list of what I require for my new site based on one estimate I received locally.

Perhaps some of you will have some advice and feedback on how much this work should cost next to the dollar signs... I don't have a frame of reference for cost because it's been so long since I created my original site.

Any colleagues on here who had expressed an interest in my project that are still interested in either bidding or commenting on my query should feel free to do so. Please ask me more questions if needed. This is just a short list below of the basic services I require, I have a site map as well.

Sorry about the size of the print...

Site Set Up
• Set up hosting, configure DNS, email = $
Design / Layout

  • Site concept and design for client review 12 hrs x $ = $

Per Page Cost

  • The attached site map has 26 main content pages
  • The standard per page development cost is $
  • At the standard cost the per page development would be 26 x $ = $

Embedded Flash Galleries - Hosted Application* $ per month for hosted application
  • Flash photo portfolios - Unlimited albums and photos.
    Admin area to add/edit/delete
  • $ install per gallery 11 x $ = $

Blog

  • Install and configure to website design 4 hrs x $ = $

Spartucus,

I am not sure if we can take individual jobs off your list or if we'd better take care of all of them on your list. I specialize in Flash so I am interested in the job for Embedded Flash Gallery.

Unlike a HTML page, however, Flash work often has a wider range of possibilities for creativity. Obviously you probably won't have 11 identitical galleries, so I need to know more information regarding your creative vision of the galleries. I need to know about the dimension of the gallery, and what basic functionability you would expect. For example, a simple photo slideshow would cost far less than a 3D photo slideshow to develop. How do you want them to look like? A Flash magazine style, or just like Flickr, a simple slideshow application. Do you need any additional Flash special transition effects? All of these factors may affect how long and how expensive each installment is.

Please let me know about these information if you're interested. My email is info [ at ] paracade.com

Best regards,
Tim

Essentially I can help you with the entire project, for my site was done by myself as well.

I only thought that by having different specialize teams working together, with you coordinating the progress, may achieve your goal of having both creativity and savy output for this project.

If you start with the right service provider, all the DNS, server host and blog stuffs will take very small amount of budget. The major part will be the Flash gallery and web design part of your website.

Is it possible to talk to you about this project more in detail via email?

Hi Everyone,
I have a thread open asking for help in creating a website, such as this one. Many people have responded to both, mostly promoting thier business. My impression from Bank of America was to use this site as a network to assist one another, but business is business, where there is an opportunity to advance in our business we will take it. even if its taking our grandma's life's saving and investing it. We wonder why the economy is what is.
I say that to say this, I'm asking for help in creating a website. I don't understand web talk :O) speak to me as I was a 4 year old. Don't tell me about flashes, layouts, 1 column or 2 columns and expect me to know how to respond. I browse the net and I get impatient in some sites and I say to myself I don't like this site. I want my site to be different. I know what I want in my site but I don't know the terminology, again help me without it costing me. Unless you a consultant and require a fee, If so remove yourself from this community. :O)

Spartucus,

I browsed through the this thread and cannot find the site map you mentioned. Now I can see more about what you want in a website, a photographer's website clears many clouds out of the view.
Now I would like to know about what content you want to include in the site by looking at a site map if you have one, then I'd know what kinds of pages you'd want among the 26~30 web pages.

For flash gallery, i appromixate the bid will be $500 each for development from scratch.

Hello Spartagus,
I am amazed at how many people have responded to your request. From the Looks of it, you posted this thread 27 minutes ago. WOW, I am amazed at how many web designers / web developers advertise their services claiming to be the best. Or that they are professionals.

I do not want to discredit any of my fellow designers / developers but there is not need to fight over a job. If you consider yourself to be the Best, there is no need for you guys to fight amongst each other. Keep focused on the Customer's requirements rather than what the last person wrote on the Forum.

Spartagus,
I am a web developer / Web Designer with over 8 years of experience in web development and design industry. Over the years I've learned various programming languages and techniques that have given me the over all advantage over my competitors. If you are looking for a web developer that will provide you with unlimited consulting and experience, I am more than happy to assist you with your project. Whether your project is big or small, I will help you allocate a budget as well as a payment plan if needed. I work with all budgets and all types of customers. Along with the development of your web site, I optimize the web site for you at no extra cost to you.

Everyone knows that a well designed and developed web site needs to be optimized from the begning and while it's in development. Not afterwards...
Should you want to proceed further and perhaps get free consultation with no commitment. Please feel free to contact me.

I have a question...I have been chatting with one designer and they said that there is a new kind of web design protocol for lack of a better description...One that uses cascading windows CSS or something like that. Apparently it's very user friendly and easy for one to go in and change content etc. and because of the way these are designed they are inexpensive to produce.

? Can anyone give me any advice or feedback on this type of website, advantages, disadvantages etc...

? Are these types of sites easy for search engines to find/ or does it still depend on traditional alt tags etc... still...

? Why are these cheaper to produce (apparently)....

? Are they glorified template sites that are easily customizable?

Many Thanks,

Spartacus,
To be honest with you, CSS (cascading style sheets) have been around for quite some time now, but they are becoming more popular now that al major browsers support CSS, There is nothing magical about using CSS.

CSS is just a tool that allows you to sepate the look of your web site, from the content (allowing for search engines to crawl through pure content rather than Images slices and so forth.

I wouldn't say that CSS is user friendly (there is a learning curve and not knowing how to edit such files can collapse your web site (if it's table-less based design)). I think what you meant to say was that it is cross-browser friendly, with the exception of Internet Explorer 7.0 and now 8.0 beta.

The truth is that all other browsers such as Mozilla, Opera, Safari and Chrome are on the same page, except for Internet Explorer, they don't care to go along with the rest of the world, this makes a developers work much more harder, because now you have to include IE Hacks (which I don't care to do) but it's just the extra leg work.

Web Sites in CSS should not make your price go up or down, it is up to the developer and what he feels comfortable with. Although, I do argue that for accessibility purpose once should go with a full CSS table-less web site, especially if you want to be able to see it in IPHONE or PDA.

As far as Search Engines are concerned, YES, having a W3C.org validated web site does increase your search engine ranking, because it has less structure to parse through. Table based layouts are more bulky and tables should only be used only if you're going to display tabular data i.e. Products.

From what I've been reading you are looking into incorporating a flash gallery? If that is your intension, make sure that it is soley to to display your pictures... but not as your primary tool to have your site developed. It will decrease your chances of indexing in the search engines. Although, Flash looks good, it can cause some serious damage if you are planning to compete in the Search Engines and against Competitors.... To have a better understanding of what a Table-less web site is, check this site out; http://www.wsrealtyinc.com this web site is completely in CSS no tables other than the rent to own page, just because it's tabular data... (coming from the database)

The only disadvantage that a CSS layout faces is: Depending on the end user's habits and how often they upgrade their machine is now your web site is going to render, for example if a customer is still using Internet Explorer 4.0, 5.0, or 6.0, PNG images with transaparent do not render correctly (they Look Gray-ish) and if you have a very colorful template guess what? its not going to look very colorful. There is also another issue with older IE Browsers and that is the 3-pixel jog, forcing developers to float div tags. (div tags is another aspect of CSS and table-less designs)

The advantage is: Well, everyone with an updated machine is going to appreciate your web site, search engines are going to feed off of your content much easier ** Depending if the CSS was coded correctly, aswell **.
Another advantage of having a CSS based web site is that, you can change the layout of your web site much faster than using tables.

If you are looking into having something that you can update yourself, meaning the images and verbiage I'd advise you to go with a Content Management System Such as Joomla or Word-Press (though they require that you learn how to use them) it might be your best solution. By using any of these content management systems, search engines will index your content faster for the simple reason that Search Engines love Fresh Content and if you are always updating your site, you are indexing faster because of the "time stamps" so you would have something like: last modified on: "The date", not only that, but a Content Management system allows you to Syndicate your feeds (RSS or ATOM) making your content much more richer and allowing others to feed off your site via XML (RSS) as well.

Finally, it allows you to multiple templates installed, and swap back and forth if that's what you intend to do.

I hope I've explained myself and that you gain knowledge and a brief understanding of what CSS is. I am actually writing an E-Book on "How to Choose the correct Web Designer for your project" Most of the stuff I talked on this thread can be found on the public domains, but what I wrote is based on my experince and knowledge.

I noticed that you are a photographer? Email me, I have a web site to share with you.

Your web site will only be limited to your designer / developers experince and knowledge.
