Hi Jordan,

I've asked this question within the Community before and received some great feedback. Would like your expert opinion. Can social networking services like Facebook and MySpace lead to sales for my small business? I have a medium-sized coffee shop in Cambridge, MA.

Thanks

I do not have any intention to sell on the web, but how helpful would it be if my store had a simple website up? Will a website help drive foot traffic? Or should I not even bother?

When balancing an online ad campaign, what kind of mix would you employ to both promote your brand and bring in customers to your web site.
  • How and where would you distribute your CPT, CPM and CPC campaigns, what kind of ads/banners would you use and what kind of web sites would you target each of these combinations at?

Best regards.

Social Networking can be an excellent marketing vehicle for a small business. Using tools such as facebook or MySpace to build a on-line group or community to promote your business can be a very cost effective way of communicating with your customers and attracting new ones as the viral element of these social networks is outstanding. In addition you could choose to buy PPC advertising for your local market but my suggestion would be too start with a group and then ad your PPC elements once you have a following.

Master Yoda:

I am not a big fan of banner advertising anymore. My recommendation would be to distribute that investment into Search Engine Optimization, Blogs and Social Networking as Banners are costly and generally are ignored by most Internet users. In regards to distribution of your spend I would suggest equal balance between PPC and SEO, Blogs and Social Networking and I would suggest finding a service provider who can help you as the task can be daunting. The sites you should target depend on your product and without knowing what you are selling the best I can say is target sites who have visitor profiles like your customers.

Thanks,

Jordan

Howard:

In today's marketplace regardless of whether you sell on-line or not it is a good idea to have a web presence. The internet has begun to overtake traditional advertising mediums such as the yellow pages and 411 as the first source a potential buyer uses to find their service provider. The internet allows the visitor to shop multiple stores before they leave their house and with the state of the economy, cost of gas and food that is happening now more then ever. If you market your website correctly it will become the most cost effective way to get a lead for your business.

I know it can be daunting to compete against the mega chains but the internet does help laying the playing field a bit. My suggestion would be target your local community via keyword/keyphrase advertising that drives traffic from specific folks within your local area who prefer to buy from someone they know versus a big chain. One more little trick I recommend is build a community using social networking like facebook and myspace to communicate with your target customer.

InTechSpecial:

I would suggest using a full service provider such as our firm who can build you a website and provide you with search marketing all for under a $100 a month. There are lots of other options you can choose to use but without having any web development or search marketing expertise I suggest you get your feet wet with a service provider instead of trying to do it yourself.

Thanks,

Jordan

Ferriss:

In my opinion a well designed site is one that addresses the following issues:

1) Target Audience - Does your site tell your potential customers what they want to hear?
2) Objectives - Does the site align to your companies objectives..i.e. is it built to make sales or generate leads?
3) Design - Is your site clean and easy for a visitor to read and use?
4) Returnability - Does your site change or provide a compelling reason for a visitor to return?
5) SEO/SEM - Is your site designed so it can work with the search engines?

If your site does all of the above you will convert customers when they arrive at your web presence.

Hi Jordan,

Are there any specific "rules of engagement" or guidelines for building a website?
