Hello everyone,

I'm new to this community. Let me introduce myself. My name is Kelly and for the past three years I've been making and selling cupcakes and baked goods to friends and friends of friends. I really enjoy baking and the joy treats bring to people. My dream is to start my own legitimate business in the next couple years.

I've been having a hard time finding any information as to what the requirements are in CA for starting a food based company. Ideally I'd like to start out in my own home instead of having to get a loan for retail space. I've checked on SCORE and SBA and ahvent found much related to this topic.

Anyone out there who has started their own bakery or catering company in California? I'd love any bits of info or advice you can share.

Thanks!
Kelly

I do not know much about starting a bakery or catering biz, but there are free resources for any business idea.

The US Small Business Administration and SCORE both offer FREE Business advice.

Visit the following website to locate a office in your area:

Welcome to the community, and good luck in your endeavors!

Kelly,

I teach a course, "Profits from my kitchen...how to operate a home based bakery."

There are currently 11 states that allow home-based bakers to sell their baked goods directly to the public. The states are: Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, and Vermont, along with numerous counties across the United States. In fact, in North Carolina you can bake cakes, pies, cookies, make candy, dried mixes, blend spices (e.g. Jerk rubs) and some sauces (e.g. barbecue and hot sauces).

I can have the staff look into this for you and see how you can operate a home-based bakery in your area...if it is indeed allowed. Let me know.
