Web site inventory control issue

Ok. My site is almost ready to go. I have ironed out 99% of every bump in the road I have came across. My last issue is my inventory control system. I can put products up for sale on my site, but I can not find a way of controling my quantities and having my site only allow so many sales of a product. In other words, if I only have 5 of item X, to set it where my site will read "out of stock". If I were to go live now, I would have no way to keep 100 people from buying an item when I only have 3 or 4 in stock. I am using web.com to host my site and there site builder has no control tools for this. They do allow to import seperate html and coding addons so installing a 3rd party addon is no proble. The issue is I can not find one that seems good. I need advice here.

meant to say, have it say "out of stock" AFTER 5 are sold.

well... i hate to say it (especially because it sounds like you have done a lot of work on your site already), but i would suggest installing oscommerce to control your website and inventory control... it does everything you are needing and a whole lot more. Unfortunately installing it would prolly mean all the work you did was for not though.

well, all i really need is something simple that will count how many of each item is sold then cut it off there. everything else i am set for. i will look into what you suggested though.

Hi fekhr and best wishes!

If you are on web.com and you're on their ECommerce package, then you most likely are using MIVA 5.5, correct?

If so, there is inventory control. Check out http://www.mivamerchant.com/products/merchant/mm5/key_mm5.html. Next, check out this post http://extranet.mivamerchant.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17734. When you are in the store, on the left side, click on Inventory, then put a check mark next to "enable inventory". Now under each product tab you can set inventory levels.

If you are not using MIVA, please let us know to better assist you.

My first posting is waiting for a moderator to approve it (probably because of pasting links to help you). So, I'll post this one so you'll have quicker access to the info.

If you are on Web.com and have its ECommerce package, you are probably using MIVA 5.5, right? MIVA does have inventory management. On the left, click on Inventory, then put a check mark on "Enable Inventory". Now under each product tab you can set inventory levels.

If you are not using MIVA, please let us know which one you are using for your store/shopping cart.

Hi again. I looked into miva 5.5. I am not using it because it is extremely expensive. 995 right now, This seems kindda like overkill to me simply because it is only one tiny feature that I need. Thanks again for the help still though.

I'm not aware of a less expensive solution (sorry) . . . but if you intent to build you business on a significant volume of repeat customers, I can reinforce that it is a function you want to have if at all possible. When a site doesn't tell me that an item is backordered or unavailable until the transaction is complete, it's frustrating. I generally cancel the order and I don't shop there again.

As I said, that doesn't help you find a solution -- but I hope it encourages you to keep looking for one. Best wishes.

Okay. So how are you posting your products or services for purchase? In order for use to help you, you need to let us know what shopping cart or program you are using. Are you just programming the items in HTML, using SQL, populating pages with ASP, PHP, etc.? I didn't know that Web.com was using another store program or have you just purchased one of their basic packages? If you have to purchase MIVA 5.5 and they don't offer it on their site (which I thought you got with their eCommerce/Marketing package), then you may need to find another hosting company.

It still holds true, though, we need more information in order to better advise you.
