Quickbooks vs MS Office Accounting

I have been a hardcore Quickbooks user for years. But when I got a new computer with Windows Vista my 2006 Quickbooks no longer would run. And I had just bought the 2006 version about 6 months ago. Just my luck!! Well I did not want to pay $200 bucks for the 2007 upgrade and then I found out that MS Accounting Express 20008 is totally free. I have been using it for about two months now and I really like it. It seems to be just as good or better as QB 2006 not to mention flawless integration with MS office. For my simple business MS Accounting Express 2008 works great. Has anyone else made the switch from Quickbooks to MS Accounting? If so what is your opinion?

I believe you are correct, the switch to Vista made certain QB products obsolete. You'd think a big company like Intuit would overcome this, but that's not the case amazingly.

One small ray of light....if one applies for and is accepted for a QB merchant processing account through many affiliate sites (but interestingly NOT via the QB direct site) they can get freebie QB 2008 software that does work with Vista. So IF anybody out there just lost the functionalityi of their QB software by upgrading to Vista AND has use for well priced merchant processing account, review the plan and apply online here:

Actually, there is a QuickBooks product that is free as well. Both the MS and QB free offerings are quite limited. I've tried them both and found neither adequate to my needs. I ended up buying QB Pro 2008, but then the last version I got was 1999, so I needed it pretty badly anyway. I'd look into that upgrade again, I didn't even pay $200 for the full version of QB Pro I purchased.

I can't speak for the MS product, but please stand corrected on the free QB product. It is not limited in any way, it is the full version of either QB Simple Start 2008 or QB Pro 2008, the same Pro 2008 Costco sells for $169 or $179 whatever.

I've been using Quickbooks for years and have hated it almost the entire time, so I'm very interested in switching.

Did you import your old QB data into MS Accounting Express? If so, how did that go? That's one thing that has kept me from switching is the pain of importing the old data, if it can even be done, QB is not good about sharing.

Thanks for all of your valued comments. I did not realize that QB has a free version of there product. I may try to find it and download it. I guess regardless of whether you switch from QB to MS accounting they both have features that will allow you to import data from one or the other.

The switch was very easy but I have a very simple business structure. I don't have tons of customer or vendor data or inventory so I did not have any problems.

I have to disagree that the MS product is limited. Again, i have a very simple business so it works fine for me. I compared the MS Express and the Professional and I could not justify spending $200 bucks for a few more features that I dont need. What did you find to be a limitation?

I am NOT A BIG FAN on the new Office 2007. Also, Vista is a long way off from working well. It's as messy as Windows ME which only lasted a year. Most people remove Vista and install XP.

I have all kinds of problems with vista and older software not working, like Sage's Act (older versions) and QB.
