To make IT really work:

Implementing a solution that really works instead of keeping a guy in the room at the end of the hall employed.

Aviation/airlines is the absolute worst, with banking running a close second.

Well lets see. How about the airline that can't find any documents on their optical scanning system because the training manual is SO ambigious and give the user so many data entry OPTIONS that even a 20 item seach page could not find it.

How about the banking institution that calls customers telling them they are late with a payment (wrong info) and the customer goes to the branch and the branch manager can't straighten it out and the only moron that can fix it is the goofball in collections who has to go into another part of the system, actually READ something and then take your number off the dialer?

Trust me theres more. There are IT people out there that should be exiled to mars. There are software companies that should be tried for theft.

DomainDiva - It sounds you have had some horrible experiences with IT.

It is always best to receive customer/professional references when dealing with any business.

Check these references out to insure they are legitimate.

You might even want to check into their portfolio of clients they have worked for.

If you need me to find a quality IT company in your area, I can do as such.

I have references for working with the following companies(as an independent consultant, not as a company):

Deparment of Homeland Security, Federal Building, Cleveland, Ohio
ADT Securties
Cleveland Clinic Hospital
Chase Bank(formally Morgan Chase Bank)
Kidney Dialysis Clinics

Also, I have relevant experience as:

Dell Technician
HP Technician
Microsoft Business Consultant

Deployment Technician

Tech Lead - Data Migration and/or Upgrade

Project Management - Network Upgrade & Migration

Network Administration & Engineer : Support and/or Analysis, implementation.

These are just a few of the organizations I have assisted in implementing a POSITIVE IT solution, either in collaboration with, or from a project managenment standpoint.

If you need references, and are serious about utilizing my company, I can assist. I would have to go against utilizing Best Buy's Geek Squad, unless you are only moving a pc or two.

If you are dealing with a Server/Client network, you might be causing yourself more trouble.

Let me expand on that last sentence.

Best Buy's Geek Squad are high end pc techs, at very best, but I would not trust them to work on a Client/Server network.

I could be wrong in this, but I only know of them to have expertiese within home pc users, and not the business IT.

BBFB at least in the DFW area is first class. If you wanted to help me in this....perhaps letting me know a couple of weeks ago when I first posted would have been great.

BBFB also did the server install in our current office and the networking of 5 workstations. It has all been seamless. You see its who you know and since I spend a lot of money on hard technology I get the best...I cna't speak for anyone else. All I know is BBFB has MY back.

I remember whenall you did was call the phone company now everyone and their dog has to be involved its worse thatn buying a house. I went with BBFB because I did not want competing companies in and all the techs getting PO'd at each other. I actually went through and installation like that and I swore I would never do it again. At least this way, if theres anyone upset they can settle it internally.

BBFB gets the job done without all the tech ego hassles. I don't go egos.

for us, the most useful technology to optimize the business

1. a website for customers to check on basic info they used to call about

2. a voice response system to help customers when they call outside business hours

3. a system to better track orders so that we don't ever lose people's dry cleaning

what i really want now is to update our technology to let me study profitability by customer type and how we found them

You should look for someone with a knowledge engineering background. They will help you identify your data layers meta object, object, class, element and then you as the content expert (yes you really are!!!) can work WITH them to design a solution for your business. Who knows? Maybe it will turn out to be something so wonderful that you could sell it to other cleaning establishments?

There are all these sales leads sites and software, why not something like what you have in mind?

Sounds wonderfully interesting.

DomainDiva - I stand corrected as far as Best Buy.

Last I dealt with Best Buy, I had the understanding that they only worked as a Level 1 tech for PC's.

Thanks for the information.

Hint for Best Buy: deal with the Flagship Magnolia Stores if you are small business.

What I like about BBFB is that they cater to small businesses first. They have decided to go after a niche market and it looks like they are doing quite well.

They most certainly are!

My main concern is that there rates are about 300% over market standards.
