What are the legal obligations and requirements to make and sell gourmet dog treats from home in the state of Arizona? I have an incredible recipe.

Parisette, Welcome to the Forum. I would suggest that you talk to a couple of vets in your area to find their levels of concern. then check with you local government for sanitation rules concerning production of animal food for retail sale. You might have to conform to local health regulations. I have a friend here in Missouri that uses a commercial kitchen to make her dog treats to comply with health codes.

Another alternative is that if you stay under the government radar, you may be able to forgo the health codes. By that I mean selling direct to consumers and selling at craft shows and flea markets.

Welcome to the community. The FDA regulates pet food, including treats and snacks -- so it seems unlikely (though not impossible) that the state of AZ would have additional requirements for products manufactured within the state.

You're not required to get pre-approval from the FDA to start manufacturing, but you are required to comply with their requirements for processing, additives, and labeling. For more info, visit:
http://www.fda.gov/cvm/market.htm

I can't point you anything specific to your state. As already suggested, maybe a local vet or agriculture extension agent would know more about that.

Hope this helps. Good luck and best wishes.

Yes SCORE is a great resource.

I walked in, shared my business plan with them(Score Akron, Ohio), and told them my idea.

They told me I would fail if I were to do business as I had planned. They told me there was no chance of any success, period. They gave me advice as to how I could succeed. I stuck to my guns of how I was going to do business. They again told me I would fail.

I walked out of thier discouraged and disgusted, how could they have such a nerve. I stuck to my way of doing business, and I failed. Now I am trying to reinvent my business, and learn all that I have been taught. It is nice to be able to still some knowledge from successful business people that have been in business all of thier life.

Be prepared, they do not sugar coat anything. They tell it like it is, and I guarantee they know what they are talking about. They would like you to succeed, and have to be honest to help you succeed.

My business is still only partially successful, I have not been back to SCORE since. I fear that they will tell me I will fail again, it might even be the truth.

I refuse to believe this, and will continue on.

Even if I fail, you cannot say I did not try. If I fail again, I will try again.

Take the knowledge the good folks at SCORE give you and hold on to it like gold. Do not make the mistake I made and take it personal, they are only trying to help.

And when you fail, pick yourself up, brush your clothes off, and try again.

Keep on paddling down stream, eventually you will get somewhere.

We looked at some homemade gourmet doggie treats and had to pass. Our shih tzus have corn and wheat gluten allergies. Does your recipie contain any of these?

You may also want to think about a non-allergen organic treat to set yourself apart.
