SEOMoz.org has a great list of people who provide these services. They are well known, and can give you some great advice. I do in-house SEO for my own company(Our business sells tires, not SEO), but reading SEOMoz on a daily basis has really sharpened my skills.

Their list is available at http://www.seomoz.org/article/recommended and they do not take any kickbacks for their recommendations.

do you recomend setting up different "search engine gateway" pages for each different search engine??
I had a book that said that you should make a different page for yahoo, good, hotbot, etc. Do you do that?

Check out the web site as noted. Then, if you live/work in a major city review the SEO Companies available.

More importantly, make sure that you maintain a solid working relationship between your web designer and the SEO Company because maximizing SEO means that you probably will have to make changes in the web site.

Last, but not least, the algorithms change all the time so SEO is not a single task, It is ongoing. That will impact your budget and the time you have to spend monitoring and supervising these activities if you do not do them yourself.

How old is that book? If you build the page correctly, it should display the same information for each search engine.

While Yahoo and MSN use Meta Tags, Google does not rely on them as much. If you have built a CSS site, things should be easily indexable.

I would worry more about cross-browser compatibility, ( making sure the page shows up the same on IE, FireFox and Safari) rather than different content for different search engines. Most of these search engines have been bought out by the Big 3, Google, Yahoo, and MSN. So they will be using the same results and algorithms that the big 3 will, no matter where you go.

I've used http://www.bluewhalews.com for my lead generation company freepoolquotes.com. When I check my traffic stats you can clearly see the rise in organic traffic. Highly recommend them, affordable if you are a small to mid size business.

SEO is definitely an ongoing process. The small change you make today will not show up in the search engines for days to weeks. It's also heavily based on your target market, so before you start looking for an SEO company, you should be very aware of your target audience such as "photographers searching for a photography portfolio website". At that point an SEO can optimize the website to target that audience. Using a keyword such as "portfolio" is too broad and returns results such as "stock portfolios".

There are ways to get a website or blog ranked almost within minutes.

It takes a little work to get to that point but I have done this with much success on many an occasion ESPECIALLY if the client is proactive

I'm a great believer in LSI and Website Structure - when that is all correct the search engines will rank any business much faster.

I do SEO (and related) for living and everyday something changes - the breadcrumbs count

I'm sorry dare but none of these programs actually work.

I don't want to get into any lengthy online chat here - just know these progs are a waste of time.

Good search starts from the ground up

Whoever said seomoz.com is cool Rand Fishkin is a great SEO and a nice guy (it all helps)

One could always think of Aaron Wall of seobook.com

None of these great pople would recommend your recommendations - go ask them at their blogs.

Once again it all starts at the "architecture" stage nothing good is free.

My professional opinion and I'm sticking to it.

Any doubters??? Go to webmasterworld.com and you will be told in no uncertain termes what the truth is.

I wholeheartedly agree. Anything thing worth doing, is worth reading up on. I would even go so far as to post the question for you in the knowledge base at SEOMoz. Never use these things. They link to what Google is increasingly calling "bad neighborhoods" They can easily hurt you in the long run.

Log in, ask any of the the Members of SEOMoz, and they will tell you the exact same thing. The only thing these programs are good at, is taking away money from a tight advertising budget. Remember, it is not the number of links that count, it is the quality of those links.

Thank you bigtires I thought I was sticking my neck out there.

Please know I do "SEO" for a living and know what works and doesn't - it's all a big jigsaw - start with one piece correctly and you'll be good at it

Buybigtires is right stay away from all SEO softwares, links software checking, and backlinks software, most of the time all of these will harm the search engines. I have a bad experience with them the first year I started my business online. Nothing is more valuable to do it manually.

Some people created softwares to submit to the directories, when you know the data fields are different on each submission form directories, your site will be rejected often for missing information or else.

This is time consuming, but once you see the results of your work, you will be happy.

http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools is a free tool from Google. http://www.websitegrader.com/ is a great free tool. It lets you see how you compare to other competing websites.

This is a free book on SEO. It is great and does work. http://www.seoelite.com/index1.htm

These all work well and are freebies. I used them and they brought out ranking up. There is no quick way to increase your ranking.

Search Engine Optimization is great, but this is only the beginning of the game.

What is the marketing strategies you've got?

Why people will buy from you once they are on your site?

What your competitors are doing?

Yes, there is more things, after the SEO to do.
