Advertising my Business

I have had a remodeling consulting business now for 12 months. I am a civil engineer and construction manager. However, age kind of caught up with me and I had to slow down. My business is localized in Southern California and I would like to keep it within a 25 mile radius of my home from which I work out of..

Here's briefly what I do: Find someone who wants to upgrade a home or business office and offer them a menu of the following: 1. Support in helping them arrive at what they want 2. Put together a simple set of sketch plans and bid docs 3. Find and sign up a contractor and award a bid 4. Help manage and inspect the work 5. approve and pay the contractor. My fee is based on the money value of the contract and is not a lot as much of this work is only small jobs. I have a website, lowyews.com and, I have used several media including Google Click but very, very poor results from all of it. I am up in the Bay Area right now as I took a regular employment job again but can't keep up the pace so, back to my business which is called Re-Do It.

I look forward to input from some of you folks who have had success in using advertising.

Thanks a lot: Frank

The Bay Area has some great "home and garden" type consumer trade shows. I'd consider getting booth space at one of those. Not only could you come away with good customer leads through direct contact, you could also network with other contractors and specialists who exhibit there (I recall booths for roofers, deck builders, door and window replacement firms, siding installers, garage doors installers, landscapers, etc.).

If you're a good writer or speaker, another possibility is offer content or presentations to local business and community groups -- perhaps on a topical issue like "Simple Remodeling Projects for Going Green" (of course, you'd highlight the role you would play in the project's success).

Those are certainly not the only options, but I hope they help. Best wishes.

Go low tech. Print up nice flyers and pass them out in the surrounding area. You could have done direct mail but that would have been costly. Continue to use the web but you may need to pound the pavement some. Walk the neighboroods you are targeting and talk to folks.

Business cards with a short message on the back will help also. Try to make a connection with bankers, and see if they will refer you. The same with the home improvement stores but I think they may view you as a competitor to the services they supply.

I hope this helps.

Welcome!

Since you're going to be so localized, I would suggest more of a local approach. Find local bulletin boards at coffee shops, harware stores, and other places where people congregate. Another suggestion is to try putting yard signs in friends yards with your name so people see that you're working somewhere.

My reply to IWrite:

Thank you for this response to my question about advertising locally. Having tried so many means I was coming around to what you have laid out for me and this is what I will concentrate on as soon as I get back home down there in Riverside, Southersn California. I was a very successful professionally employed construction engineer but now I am discovering, I hope, how to be a small businessman.

I rate your response the best for my circumstances but I very much appreciate the other replies too.

Thank you,

There's no problem -- I'm asking if there's a website where we can see your Vehicle Wrap. I didn't find anything on the site in your profile. Thanks!

Here is another approach you can take...

Rather than spend your money on advertising, change your delivery to marketing public relations. What does this mean?

You have a unique talent and skills as noted in your posting. Your paying for your web siote, so start using it to generate potential business. Add both a blog and forum to your main page. Post topics on the foum for vistors to reply and give input. Let them sign up to your new community. Also, write about your business (weekly if possible) and these postings will go out onto the web as information. When people "Google" that particular topic, you will show up as providing useful advice. Over time, your "Google Juice" will increase!

Also, I would spend some of that advertising money on improving your web design and functionality. Remember, perceptions rein supreme on the web and most people decide to business with you based on their first look at your web site.

Hope that helps!

For me, it is very effective when I have a qualified list of prospects that I built and maintain (in other words when I'me e-mailing people who already recognize my business name, and are known buyers of what I sell). In my experience, it was only marginally effective to totally ineffective when I relied on someone else's list of prospects (i.e., the recipients had never heard of me, and may not have even been in the market for what I was offering). Even some of the expensive, supposedly well-refined lists/services appear to be hit-or-miss and the price per read/response for my projects ended up being higher than with direct mail.

I do think this is a rapidly evolving advertising method, however, so the fact that I was disappointed with the results I got two years ago doesn't mean I'd never try it again. Before I did, however, I find a business owner who experienced success with a project similar to mine and get a recommendation.

Hope this helps answer your question, carriong. Best wishes.
