I would be very cautious about starting a business in a place with which you are not familiar. It probably makes sense to go someplace where you have some connection and see if they need your product or service. Thinking big is always good, but the facts are usually on the ground and that requires doing solid research to make sure that you have a good handle on the situation.

The rules are same, you just have to follow them more carefully and with ot of hardwork. Basic rule of doing business are:

1. Idea ( Product/Service) & it's verification/validation

2. Customer location( any place in the world) his/her needs & what price he/she will pay to buy it.

3. What is in it for you.

Rest everything become easier. Therefore the first thing is to figure out if your idea has any need in that country?
a. You can do it in so many ways. Contact local embassy of that country and get information about the cuture, the style of living and if there is any need of your idea.
b. You can contact chamber of commerce in each major city and ask for business references to expand business. They always have contact for good people to guide you.
c. Contact your own chamber of commerce and ask if they have any relationship with cities in that country. Most chamber has relationship and give you the name to contact.
d. Check your local newspaper and see if that country people has some groups meetings. Join them and discuss the oppurtunities of doing business in their countries. Most of them love to share with you that knowledge.
e. Check US commerce depaartmen web site to see if any business activity is going on with that country on product you are thinking, if yes what companies are doing it. Get the contact information and make contact.

Now you have enough knowledge to decide if this is worth doing business or not, profit margins etc.
Prepare a business plan and do good duedeligence.
Prepare marketing plan and financial plan.

Now you are ready to present your business plan for funding or financing. Hoefully team is set and business can be started.

Before you can be successful in this or any other country, you'll have to have a comprehensive business plan. Go to [www.score.org|http://www.score.org] or [www.sba.gov|http://www.sba.gov] and you can download a format that will be easy to follow and will ask you the right questions to help you decide whether it is feasible to do business in another country. Once you have the business plan in place, you will have the information you need about technology, competition, customer need, pricing, cost of sales, expenses, etc. Without all that information, you won't be able to make an accurate decision for your business. Good luck!!!

Starting a company overseas can be a minefield of legal and regulatory issues. Without a doubt, its not an endeavor to go into without first doing your homework about the country and the market your entering - there are many industries in various countries which are protected. Another significant issue is the percentage of foreign ownership allowed in certain countries.

My company provides reasonably priced services for businesses wanting to enter Asia. However, I would always first suggest that other options be looked at before establishing a legal entity, i.e. using agency agreement, setting up a distribution agreement; JV with local company, etc.

Also, I would suggest that you also do your homework on available technology in other countries. The countries you mentioned - China & Japan - despite the fact that many countries operate in a low tech environment - they have some of the best technology in the World for business process, IT, etc.

Good Luck

Although there are many challenges to getting a foot-hold of business in another country, there are ways to get a quick understanding of the markets & opportunities available.

One such method would be utilize a middleman. There are many companies which specialize in helping individuals like yourself to connect with the right organizations overseas. Whether it is China, India, or South America, these third parties can provide deep knowledge of the target markets as most have experience working in their specialty country and/or industry.

However, it is not without a cost. These middlemen can be quite costly but they may be worth it in the long run. To get the most out of using a third party, it is best if you understand your company and products/services thouroughly. With the vast amount of information available on the internet, you should have knowledge of what you are looking for as this will help the third parth better meet your needs.

Here is an example of an organization which provides such a service to the China market:

Hope this helps.

Hi gymrat,
Our website is under construction at the moment. But you could consult our head office group site.
I just want to help people who want to develop their business in EU.

The first thing to do is : to start being serious where you are; avoid mistakes and faults on a web site or in a forum where you provide your URL or address...Cause this could affect your image for long term. Get a good copy writer or a marketing consultant like us; to help you build a dynamic business strategy...
With a mind presence to conquer the world. Here too, we can help.
The second thing is: after a first success in your area or your city, you can get a future view to expand overseas. And we'll continuous to help you.
The third thing to do is: to contact us. Have a look to our profile. Read our contributions and find our email address. After this application, you will be on the right way starting using marketing forces for your business expansion. Don't forget, many people are doing the same....

A great place to start a regional business in the Asia market is Singapore which is very business friendly with everything online at the SingGov website. I lived there as an expat for a few years and my wife registered a startup online in less than 45 minutes for under $100. (Corp do cost more)

Registering a business in a South East Asia country is pretty straight forward though understanding culture and business climate is much more of more important.

And I'll make a bet Singapore has, or is working on, whatever it is you have for technology as they are consistently on the cutting edge

Hello Dear,
Your web site is under construction too. Please read my last post and correct your site presentation; grammar and orthographic faults and english language incompatibilities.
Don't use template pictures. Show your real offices or work place. Put your picture as you are a service entreprise in repairs.
Last thing: All the existing technology is in Asia now! They manufacture for the World.
This (yours) question is answered. So, look at my new post: How to expand my business overseas!

First, you may establish your business representative overseas. Virtual Office services offers great yet low cost solution for companies to operate overseas without having to spend money on renting an office space.
Virtual Office service helps reduce expensive start-up costs of leasing office space, unnecessary telephone deposit, utility cost and office facilities.

It provides you with business address, telephone number along with telephone answering service provided by professionally trained staff who will also be looking after your guests and clients. It offers usage of facilities and infrastructure in premium business buildings in prime central business districts.

You could run your business globally without having to be personally present and worrying the global cost burden.

Go to this site http://www.asia-connections.com/ and contact them ... They specialise in overseas, mostly China I believe I dont know any of the costs involved but I do know it costs far more without them, DONT TRY THIS ON YOUR OWN as there are alot of gvt regulations that you could get in trouble with.
