Let's say I want to start an LLC called "Joe's Bowling Ally and Recreation Center". I'd like to sometimes refer to it as simply "Joe's Bowling" (For example, on a business credit card or in some radio advertising). Can I do this? Do I need to do a dba or something?

Yes to both. The LLC is called "Joe's Bowling Ally and Recreation Center"
You can put any wording or saying on your business card.
Do you have an accountant?? Lawyer??

I've met with an accountant, and she said I wouldn't want a name that long because I'd always have to include a dba phrase when referring to the business. Basically, I just want the ability to say something like:

"Come to Joe's Bowling Ally and Recreation Center in downtown Columbus. At Joe's Bowling, we have the shiniest balls you'll ever see."

It is your business and your money. The fun of own a business is being able to do (most) anything you want.
Maybe it is time to find another Accountant.

With an LLC you do need to have a DBA set up to use that shortened name.
The reason is that with an LLC, you are required to use the full entity name with either LLC, L.L.C. or Limited Liability Company written after it.
If you setup a DBA, you can then use the shortened name in place of the full entity name.

Hope this information helps.

So does this mean I would need to do two DBAs?

Official name: "Joe's Bowling Ally and Recreation Center, LLC"
DBA for: "Joe's Bowling Ally and Recreation Center"
DBA for: "Joe's Bowling"

Technically, yes...because you are dropping the LLC extension.

I have an individual owned business. It's call Crown Building Maintenance Services. Do I have to do anything to just refer to it as CBMS?

If by "individual owned business" you mean a sole proprietor because you haven't filed the necessary documents for an LLC or a corporation, then the sole proprietorship legal name is "Crown Building Maintenance Services." Also, unless you register that sole proprietorship locally with the city or county you operate the business, then technically you created a second sole proprietorship with the name "CBMS."

I recommend you register your sole proprietorship at your local city or county offices for right to use both names for one company, that way you don't create two seperate companies by accident.

I know the original question asked for the case of LLC's. Is it the case for all corporate entities or are there exceptions?

It is registered with the county, but it's registered as 'Crown Building Maintenance Services'. What would I do then?

12. How many DBA names does bank america allow on a single acct Feb 8, 2008 12:00 AM

Since this topic is about DBA names I figured I would toss in a related question. Does anyone know what bank americas policy is on DBA names? I had someone tell me that only one dba can be added to a bank acct there, and that if you want anymore dba names listed with them you need a seperate account for each. But a friend that worked for wamu for many years says that wamu can put as many as you want on a single account.

Does anyone know how many DBA names bank america allows on a single business account? Considering setting up an llc that will operate 5 or more dba businesses. For tax purposes we want only one business etc.
