I am looking to run my start up from my apartment in California. I am worried that I would possibly be violating some sort of zoning law. Does anyone know a good place to look into this?? It would be all online and would involve only keeping a small amount of inventory on site. Thanks

Yes you can if you've got the authorization from the owner of this appartment, because you will need this to apply for your licence and other documents.

You're generally okay if no customers are coming to your home, and you're not selling or stocking anything that's alive, hazardous, or perishable. The California State Board of Equalization is the starting point for most business and licensing questions there:

Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Of course. As long as your a service provide and not trying to setup a store inside your house for customers to come by!

Reply with your county and I'll provide you with ALL the information.

If you are in Los Angeles, you can go to the City of Los Angeles website and there will be a link for you to click on that will take you right where you need to be. You can also visit the website for the state of California (cal.gov). As a general rule of thumb if you live in say Encino or Sherman Oaks, for all intensive purposes that is still the city of Los Angeles.
If you are not in LA, visit your county or cities website. There will be links posted there too.
Good Luck

You should be able to run your internet business from an apartment with no problems. The main factor that seems to be questioned is whether you will have excessive traffic at your residence, and since it is on the internet, I am assuming that there would be little if any actual customer's coming to your residence. The reason for this is that the city, where you will probably have to obtain an occupational license, does not want your neighbors bothered by your customers coming and going from your business. I would first go to the Occupational Licensing Dept. in your city. They should be able to answer your questions and I do not believe that zoning would be a problem, unless of course, your city has some local laws prohibiting home based businesses, which, if they do, I believe that would be a violation of your constitutional rights to earn a living, and therefore I don't think that you will encounter problems, but you are wise to check it out for yourself and do not rely on any info you receive on message boards, even mine, but since I have had several home based businesses and never ran into a problem, I don't believe that you will either, but here again, even I could be wrong, so check with the people that you will eventually have to see for an occupational license anyway, unless your internet business is one that you may not even need to get an occupational license for.
