I want to start a search engine if you will for fellow horse people to find local services, vets, farms, etc..... I then want to expand it to a national search engine.... How does one start such a business and what are the proper steps to ensure best potential? There are few others out there like this and I think it would be both emotionally and financially rewarding. Thanks!

Interesting business venture to get into. With Google making a move on "cloud computing" and now Yahoo! entering into the same avenue it is interesting to see what entrepreneurs will come up with for their search engine technology. Are you planning on programming your own search engine technology or using one of the larger search engines out there?

There are lots of similar sites to what you describe, mostly just built from advertising links:
Horse Search Engine (http://www.horsetacksupply.com/searchengine/)
WebPony (http://webpony.com/links/)
American Horse Network (http://www.americanhorsenetwork.com/)
HorseWeb (http://www.horseweb.com/)
EquiWorld (http://www.equiworld.net/horselinks/)

I'm sure some of the web devs in this community could tell you how to model one of those (and probably even improve on it).
