Another Idea when you are first starting out is to network with other caterers....busy ones. If you build a relationship with them they will send business your way they can't handle or sub contract it out. There are many resources available such as http://www.startingcateringbusinessblog.com/

There are some really great resources online. I think SCORE and the information from dsilverio are great places to start. You can also get some ideas here: http://www.cateringmagazine.com/home/
When I was first starting catering business I started from my home, and actually with very little money. When I got mt first job I told them I required a 50% deposit to secure the date. That was enough to buy product and rent items I needed for the event. I saved my profits for reinvestment and eventually got an events facility. You can find more info on the topic at www.startingcateringbusinessblog.com
To start a catering biz you would have to start checking with the local health dept as well as city and county authorities. You could get good info from The Personal Chefs Network www.personalchefsnetwork.com which I belong to.

Good Luck. Remember focus on what makes your business unique/special...
What to start a catering business

If a family member of my family wanted to start a catering business, I would suggest the following:

Narrow the field down to what kind of catering. Working from home?? or from a store?? In South Carolina?? Do your homework, then contact SCORE. SCORE is FREE and that is what SCORE does best. They will help with a Business and Marketing Plan and maybe even suggest how much money is needed.

Good luck, LUCKIEST
