Testing and approval requirements for new hurricane product

I have applied for patent on a new door brace for hurricane application. This device is not intended to satisfy building codes, but rather is an add-on to provide added security during a storm. Do I need government approvals before a product can be sold to the public (and therefore before I can market to distributors and retailers)?
Also I am planning to produce a short video of the product as a marketing tool. Any marketing suggestions would be appreciated. This could be retailed by major home improvement retailers or sold by hurricane shutter companies which are plentiful in hurricane prone areas.
I am moving forward steadily with this project. Your suggestions will be very much appreciated.
