When I started my business, BeadBuddies.net, I took a loan from myself. Many of us have 401k's from current employers or past. The great thing about the 401k loan is if you default you don't have anyone getting mad at you. You just have to pay taxes and a penalty. Luckily my business did well and I was able to pay my loan back! I started my business while working full-time for someone else. It is hard work but well worth it in the end!

My advice is never borrow from family or friends. I have many that try to borrow from me now and my advice to them is they would not need to borrow money if they managed their own better. I try to avoid these people most of the time because I know they are going to be wanting something. Trust me, it will definitely ruin a relationship.

This article was helpful. I am debating about whether to turn to family and friends versus using a credit card or actually getting a bank loan. While it is easiest to turn to family, it looks like it could cause problems. “If your business runs into trouble and is slow to repay a loan—or unable to repay altogether—that can create serious problems with the family members who gave you the money. Remember, you don't have to spend Thanksgiving with your bank.” There is something to be said for an enjoyable Thanksgiving that is not filled with talks of business.
